إنا أناس تستنير جدودنا

Poetry is the essence of a person laid bare

فلا تنكحن الدهر إن كنت ناكحا

So do not marry Time, if you wish to marry,

إني إذا ما الخليل أحدث لي

Whenever my friend turns away from me,

لسنا وإن أحسابنا كرمت

Though our pedigree is noble,

أجد اليوم جيرتك احتمالا

Your neighbor was very patient today

أريد لأنسى ذكرها فكأنما

I want to forget her, yet it's as though

أرأيت إن أهلكت مالي كله

If I lost all my wealth

ألا أبلغ أبا قيس رسولا

Shall I not send a messenger to Abu Qais

في كفه خيزران نشره عبق

In his hand a bouquet whose fragrance spreads

صرمتك ريطة بعد طول وصال

Your absence has pained me after long companionship,

ورد تظل له السباع تطيعه

A rose, around which beasts of prey prowl and obey,

إذا زفرات الحب صعدن في الحثا

When love's sighs waft on high

أبلغ أبا إسحاق إن جئته

Tell Abu Ishaq if you meet him,

خليلي عوجا اليوم وانتظراني

My friend, turn away today and wait for me,

ولست بقانع من كل فضل

I'm not content with any gift of chance

لا أعدم الذم حين أخطي

I do not lack blame when I err,

كأن مدامة صهباء صرفا

As though a gray cloud, pouring down,

قتلوا حسينا ثم هم ينعونه

They killed Hussein then they eulogize him

إننا معشر خلقنا صدورا

نام الخلي فنوم العين تسهيد

فتن الشعبي لما

تجرم لي بشر غداة أتيته
