قوس الشيب قناتي
The greying of my temples
ألبسني حلة الضنى قمر
A moon clothed me in the garb of longing,
معانقة العجوز أشد عندي
The old woman's embrace means more to me
انظر إلى الهلال إذ لاح
Look at the crescent moon
أيا حبذا إجانة كيفما اغتدت
How delightful a gift, whenever bestowed,
ومعتنقين ما اتهما بعشق
Those accused of love's embrace,
إذا اضطربت سمر اليراع بكفه
When the fox stirs his tail with his paw
كأن جنى القوطي في رونق الضحى
Like the buds of an oleander in the grace of dawn
ومدامة لبست غلالة نرجس
A beauty donned a narcissus garment
سلام ولا أقرا سلاماً على هند
Peace, though I bid no peace to Hind
وخديمة للعلم في أحشائها
A servant of knowledge in its depths
يا هلالاً قد تبدى
O crescent that has appeared
نشرت ثلاث ذوائب من شعرها
She let down three braids of her hair
ودعتها ومدامعي
I bid her farewell while my tears
إذا أبصر المحزون أرض شذونة
When the sad one sees a land of delight
بنفسي هاتيك الزوارق أجريت
With my own self those boats I steered
هاك مني بيتاً سيكثر إن مت
When I am gone, though versions will unfold
وبهار يحكى كؤوس لجين
With a spring that tales of cups of silver narrate
فحم ذكت في حشاه نار
Embers that ignited a flame within,
جلوت لنا شيئا من الدر عاطلاً
You served us some dull pearls of yours.
ومهفهف عبث الشمول بقده
The boredom played with his laziness,
لما تقوس مني الجسم عن كبر
When my body bends over from old age
سائل بغرته الهلال المقمرا
The asker with his crescent-like smile,
منعلة بالهلال ملجمة
With a new moon as a muzzle it appears
يا بأبي ظبي إذا مارنا
يا خليلي بالركاب سحيراً
عندي فديتك راءات ثمانية
تعجبت أن رأت مشيبي
وإذا اضطررت لآدمي ميتاً
سلام على حمص وإن غير البلى
يا سيدي والزمان يبلى
قوس ظهري المشيب والكبر
