O you who came to pick olives while the trees were bare,

1. O you who came to pick olives while the trees were bare,
And deduced what was past from the leaves that were there,

2. Do you know what's unseen, beyond all other men?
No, by Him who made humans from a clinging clot!

3. You just infer from the signs that you see within;
Like one piercing pearls in a pitch-dark night.

4. So turn to God, beware what your acts lead you to,
One who dares the sea is not safe from the drowning dew.
