ابن كسرى

وابأبي رائق الشباب ويا

By my father’s youthful radiance, by

بإحدى هذه الخيمات جاره

In one of these tents my neighbor

أمعشر أهل الأرض بالطول والعرض

O people of the earth, in length and breadth

وقالوا حبيبك ذو شارب

They said, "Your beloved has a mustache,"

لئن لزمت خمولي يا أبا حسن

Though I have clung to my indolence, O Abu Hasan,

إلهي أنت الله ركني وملجئي

My friend, shine your inner light

بادر كؤوسك إنما هي أنجم

Hasten your cups for they are but stars

شربنا مع الحيتان في يبس النهر

We drank with the whales in the dry riverbed

ولم يبق منها غير لون نقائها

And naught remains save the hue of its purity

سقى الرائح الغادي زمانا قطعته

The passing breeze has quenched my thirst for some time

وكم يتمنى المرء تخليص نفسه

How much one wishes to free himself,

يا شاعراً يتسامى

O poet who aspires high

قسما بحمص وإنه لعظيم

I swear by Humus, it is truly grand,

وخالق بنقصان جميع الورى تسد

The creator of all mankind is perfect despite any shortcoming,

مرامكم لا ينال

Your goal cannot be attained

تخط يخط الشوق في القلب شخصها

Longing draws her figure in the heart

حسام هو الموت الزؤام متى يشم

The sword is death, whenever it is drawn,

أبا عمرو الأعلى لعمرك ما المنى

O Abu Amr Al-A'la, in your life no wish

له لدعاء أمير المسلمين ارتياحة

The prayer of the Muslim leader is soothing

وكنا إذا ما لزمنا الوقار

When duty called for serious mien,

وخضر من الدوحات لمي ظلالها

Green are the palms, their shade covering the valleys,

نمت على نفس الشمال شمول

The North wind blew gently

يا مولعا بالبهار زرنا

يا لائما قد ألام لما

وما رأت عيناي فيما مضى

أشهد ألا إله إلا الله
