1. When duty called for serious mien,
We kept within decorum's bound.

2. As one who deems it sin to drink,
We wine's delights completely shunned—

3. Until a comrade, drinking deep,
Besought us join him on the ground.

4. So joy unlocked sad wisdom's hold;
His wine assuaged our fevered brow

5. His flowing cup refreshed our souls,
And intertwined our arms allowed.

6. Thus he pled the wine's grace to us,
And it for us pled grace with him.
