وما شيء أحب إلى لئيم

And nothing to a villain is more dear

سئلوا فأبوا فلقد بخلوا

They were asked but refused, so they were miserly indeed.

أتبكي بعد شيب قد علاكا

Still do you weep though age has silvered your hair

لو كنت تعلم ما أقول عذرتني

If you knew what I was saying, you would excuse me

يا ويح قلبي من دواعي الهوى

Oh my aching heart with passion's pain

عش ما بدا لك قصرك الموت

Live as long as your life seems short

المرء ذو صوت يعيش به

A man of voice lives through it

عقل من يعقل مرآة

The mind of one who understands is a mirror

نزلوا مركز الندى وذراه

They descended to the center of Nada and its seeds

تكثر من الإخوان ما اسطعت إنهم

Many brothers abound when riches gleam bright

وفيت كل صديق ودني ثمنا

I repaid every friend who lent me at a price

إن الذي شق فمي ضامن

The one who stitched my mouth shut

صف خلق خود كمثل الشمس إذ بزغت

Describe the nature of your being

ما اتسعت أرض إذا كان من

No land, however vast, can contain

اعمل بعلمي وإن قصرت في عملي

Act according to my knowledge though I fall short in my deeds

الله صور كفه

God shaped His palm

يممته الرمح شزرا ثم قلت له

I aimed my spear at him sharply, then said:

وقبلك داوى المريض الطبيب

Before you the doctor cured the sick

كفاك لم تخلقا للندى

Your palms were not created for generosity,

وما بلغ الإنعام في النفع غاية

The gifts of bounty have attained no goal, however high,

نصحتك يا محمد إن نصحي

I advised you, O Muhammad, though my counsel

وما بقيت من اللذات إلا

Little remains of life's pleasures

حسبك مما تبتغيه القوت

It is enough for you from what you seek as sustenance

صلب الهجاء على امرىء من قومنا

Harsh is the censure upon a man of my tribe

يعيش المرء في أمل

One lives in perpetual hope

بطل النحو الذي جمعتم

The grammar you have compiled is worthless

العلم يذكي عقولا حين يصحبها

Knowledge enlivens minds when wisdom accompanies them,

وهذا المال يرزقه رجال

And this money is granted to men

زر وادي القصر نعم القصر والوادي

Visit the palace valley, what a fine palace and valley

يا جنة فاقت الجنان فما

Oh Garden of Paradise beyond all gardens, no price or value can match you.

غر جهولا أمله

His foolish hopes deceive him,

يداك يد خيرها يرتجى

One hand offers goodness hoped for

إني بليت بمعشر

I suffer from a group,

كتبت بخطي ما ترى في دفاتري

I wrote with my hand what you see in my notebooks

إن الخليط تصدع

The mixture is cracked

وخصلة يكثر الشيطان إن ذكرت

A trait the devil oft exploits when named -

أنست بوحدتي ولزمت

I became accustomed to being alone and remained in my home

ترفعت عن ندى الأعماق وانخفضت

She rose above the dew of the depths and descended

وأفضل قسم الله للمرء عقله

The best gift of God to a man is his reason,

إذا كنت لا تدري ولم تك كالذي

If you do not know and are not like one

يقولون لي دار الأحبة قد دنت

They say the abode of loved ones has drawn near,

ياذا الذي في الحب يلحى أما

O you who suffers from love, don't you know

رزقت جودا ولم أرزق مروءته

I was granted generosity though not granted its nobility

ما أسمج النسك بسآل

How ugly is asceticism in one who asks,

إذا ضاق باب الرزق عنك ببلدة

If sustenance is straitened for you in a town,

الله ربي والنبي محمد

Allah is my Lord and Muhammad is the Prophet

افخر وكاثر بالقريحة

Boast and take pride in talent

وما هي إلا ليلة ثم يومها

أبلغا عني المنجم أني

إن لم يكن لك لحم

سألزم نفسي الصفح عن كل مذنب

أذا ضيقت أمرا زاد ضيقا

إن كنت لست معي فالذكر منك هنا

أيا فرجا من عند رب مفرج

ألا ينهاك شيبك عن صباكا

أبلغ سليمان أني عنه في سعة

لا تقبلن الشعر ثم تعقه

وعاجز الرأي مضياع لفرصته

ليس المسيء إذا تغيب سوءه

لا يكون السري مثل الدني

ما ازددت في أدبي حرفا أسر به

هذا عمرو يستعفي من

ورد العفاة المعطشون فأصدروا

قالت أتهزأ بي غداة لقيتها
