أبت عين ابن عمك أن تناما

My cousin’s son’s eye refused to sleep

إن يقتلوك أبا حكيم غدرة

If they kill you treacherously, Abu Hakeem

ألا أبلغ أبا إسحاق أنى

Shall I not inform Abu Ishaq that I

دعا الرحمن بشر فاستجابا

Bishr called upon the Merciful, so He answered his prayer,

متى ما تلق بى خيلا تداعى

Whenever faced by galloping horses

ألا يا لقومى للهموم الطوارق

O my people, for the misfortunes that attack by night,

زعمت ربيعة وهى غير ملومة

Rabia claimed, and she is blameless,

أتاكم غلام من عراننين مذحج

A youth came to you from honorable Maḍḥij

ألا أبلغ أبا إسحاق أنا

Convey to Abu Ishaq that we

لا تنكحن الدهر إن كنت ناكحا

Do not marry this ever-changing world, even if you are eager for marriage,

أقاتل مهديا وتلك سفاهة

I fight Mahdiyya, though it was sheer folly,

أتوعدنا ربيعة فى إياس

Does Rabee'ah promise us in despair,

لا تطلبن فتاة من وسامتهأ

Do not seek a maiden for her beauty alone,

فقلت تلقاك الإله برحمة

I said may God receive you with mercy

مجالسة السفيه سفاه رأى

قد كنت أحسب يابن قين مجاشع

إن الاحبة آذنوا بترحل

أعينى جود بالدموع السواكب

لعمرك إني فى الحياة لخائف

لمن الديار كانهن سطور

لم أر مثل الخيل خيل ابنش مخنف

ثوى سيد الأزدين أزد شنوءة
