- أبلغ جذيمة إن عرضت فإننيTell Jadhima, if you meet him, that I
- أبلغ لديك بني قيس مغلغلةConvey to the sons of Qays there with you a far-travelling message:
- أتاني عن قيس بني زهيرThere came to me from Qays of the sons of Zuhayr
- إذا فارقت ثعلبة بن سعدWhen I leave Thaʿlabah ibn Saʿd
- أراني الله بالنعم المندىMay God show me the well-watered herds
- اعزفا لي بلذة قينتياPlay for me the lute with pleasure
- ألا أبلغ النعمان عني رسالةHo, convey a message from me to al-Nuʿmān:
- ألا سائل النعمان إن كنت سائلاCome, ask al-Nuʿman, if you would inquire,
- ألا لستم منا ولا نحن منكمIndeed, you are not of us and we are not of you
- الحافظو عورة العشيرةThose who guard the clan’s vulnerable flank—no
- إني سمعت حنّة اللفاعIndeed, I heard the plaintive cry of al-Lifāʿ
- بالله قد نبهته فوجدتهBy God, I did wake him, and found him
- تعلم أبيت اللعن أني فاتكKnow—may you be spared curses—that I shall assassinate
- قفا فاسمعا أخبركما إذا سألتماStop, you two, and listen; I will tell you, since you asked:
- لعمري لقد جاورت في حي وائلFor my life, I have dwelled among the tribe of Wā’il
- لعمري لقد حلت بي اليوم ناقتيBy my life, today my she-camel has indeed set me down
- لقد قال لي عند المجاهد صاحبيMy companion indeed said to me at al-Majahid,
- متى تملك القلب الذكي وصارماWhenever you possess a keen heart and a sharp sword,
- نأت سلمى وأمست في عدوSalma has gone far away and now dwells among enemies,
- همت عكابة أن تضيم لجيماʿUkābah intended to wrong Lujaym.
- يكلفني الكندي سير تنوفةThe Kindite burdens me with a journey through a desolate wilderness,
