Sol 6.1

  1. قفا فاسمعا أخبركما إذ سألتما

    محارب مولاه وثكلان نادم

    Stop, you two, and listen; I will tell you, since you asked:

    A man at war with his patron, bereaved and remorseful.

  2. فأقسم لولا من تعرض دونه

    لخالطه صافي الحديدة صارم

    So I swear, but for whoever stood in his defense,

    A keen sword of pure iron would surely have pierced him.

  3. حسبت أبا قابوس أنك سالم

    ولما تصب ذلا وانفك راغم

    You thought, Abu Qabus, that you were safe,

    But you have yet to suffer humiliation, your nose rubbed in dust.

  4. فإن تك أذواد أصبن وصبية

    فهذا ابن سلمى رأسه متفاقم

    For if some small camel-herds and children were seized,

    Then here is Ibn Salma, his head gaping open.

  5. علوت بذي الحيات مفرق رأسه

    وهل يركب المكروه إلا الأكارم

    I brought Dhu al-Hayyat down upon the crown of his head;

    And who rides into peril but the noblest?

  6. فتكت به كما فتكت بخالد

    وكان سلاحي تحتويه الجماجم

    I slew him unawares, as I slew Khalid,

    And skulls held my weapon within them.

  7. أخصيي حمار بات يكدم نجمة

    أتا كل جاراتي وجارك سالم

    O testicles of a donkey that spent the night gnawing a tuft of grass—

    He came to all my female neighbors, while your neighbor stayed safe.

  8. تمنيته جهرا على غير ريبة

    أحاديث طسم إنما أنت حالم

    You wished for it openly, without misgiving—

    Tales of Tasm! You are only dreaming.

  9. بدأت بهذى ثم اثني بهذه

    وثالثة تبيض منها المقادم

    I began with this, then follow it with this,

    And a third that turns forelocks white.

  10. شفيت غليل الصدر منه بضربة

    كذلك يأبى المغضبون القماقم

    I quenched my breast's burning thirst with a blow against him;

    Such is the defiance of mighty chiefs when angered.
