إذا أنت أقررت الظلامة لامرئ

When you decree darkness for a man

ألم يبلغك والأنماء تنمي

Did word not reach you as the years grew

تعرفن من ذبيان من لو لقيته

You can tell from my eyelids who if I met

شفيت النفس من حمل بن بدر

I have relieved my soul of the burden of the sons of Badr

أما لك لا تأمن فزارة واخشها

Do you not fear the sudden, furtive visitor?

متى تتحزم بالمناطق ظالما

When will you gird yourself with determination, though unjustly wronged,

كم فارس يدعى وليس بفارس

How many a knight who boasts, yet is no knight!

تعلم أن خير الناس ميت

I learned that the best of people is a dead man

لعمرك ما أضاع بنو زياد

By your life! The sons of Ziyad

إن يوم الهباة أورثني الذل

The day I was defeated brought me disgrace

لحا الله قوما أرشوا الحرب بيننا

God has forsaken a people who dragged us into war

جزاني الزهد مان جزاء سوء

My asceticism has rewarded me with naught but ill,

فما أم أدراض بأرض مضلة

For what mother of offsprings in a misleading land

أينجو بنو بدر بمقتل مالك

Where are the sons of Badr in slaying Malik?

أخي والله خير من أخيكم

My brother, by Allah, is better than your brother

فإن تك حربكم أمست عوانا

Though you made war my protection before,

قل لمن يفهم عني ما أقول

إن تك حرب فلم أجنها

مالي أرى إبلي تحل كأنها

أسير الى بني بدر بأمر

جزاك الله خيرا من خليل

يود سنان لو نحارب قومنا

أذنب علينا ستم عروة خاله
