- ألا أبلغا الوركاء أن عميدهاHark! You two, tell al-Warkāʾ that its chief

- ألم ترنا غداة المقر جئناDid you not see us, on the morning at al-Maqr, when we came
- ألم يأتيك والأنباء تسريHas word not reached you, as tidings travel,
- إن ابن عفان الذي جربتمIndeed, Ibn Affan—the man you have put to the test—
- إن تك ذا قرو ونجم وجوزلIf you have a wooden bowl, greens, and squab,
- جلبنا الخيل من أكناف نيقWe brought the horses from the flanks of Niq
- جلبنا الخيل من بلد ببابWe brought the horses from a land at Bab
- جلبنا الخيل والإبل المهارىWe brought the horses and the Mahri camels
- شاب المفارق والأعراض فالتمعتIt mingled crowns and flanks, and they gleamed;
- شفى النفس قتلى بين روضة سلهبThe slain amid Salhab’s meadow healed the soul.
- شهدنا بعون الله أفضل مشهدWe witnessed, with God's aid, the finest encounter,
- صبحنا الحيرة الروحاء خيلاWe came upon spacious al-Hirah at dawn with cavalry,
- صبحنا بالبقايس رهط كسرىAt al-Biqayis we served Kisra's men
- ضربنا حماة النرسيان بكسكرWe struck the defenders of al-Nirsiyan at Kaskar,
- لا تأكلوا أبدا جيرانكم سرفاNever devour your neighbors to excess,
- لعمري لقد كانت قرابة مكنفBy my life, Mukannif’s bond of kinship was indeed
- لعمري وما عمري علي بهينBy my life—and my life is no small thing to me—
- هل معشر في الناس أفضل مشهدIs there a people among men finer in battle,
- والله أورثنا من فضل نعمتهAnd God, out of the bounty of His grace, caused us to inherit
- وسائل زرنجا هل كب جمعاAnd ask Zaranj whether a host was laid low
- وما دل قوما قبلنا ثور حجرهAnd no bull in its enclosure had ever guided a people before us.
