ضَرَبناwe struck حُماةَthe defenders of النِرسِيانِal-Nirsiyan بِكَسكَرٍat Kaskar
غَداةَon the morning لَقَيناهُمwe met them بِبيضٍwith bright swords بَواتِرِcleaving
We struck the defenders of al-Nirsiyan at Kaskar,
We struck the protectors of Persia with spears
the morning we met them with bright, cleaving swords.
The next morning when we met them with sharp swords
وَفُزناand we triumphed عَلىover الأَيّامِthe days وَالحَربُwhile war لاقِحٌpregnant
بِجُردٍwith sleek steeds حِسانٍhandsome أَوor برودٍmantles غَرائِرِfine and soft
And we triumphed over the days—while war was pregnant—
And we triumphed over the days and war stirred up
winning handsome, sleek steeds or fine mantles.
With brave charges or glistening coats of mail
وَظَلَّتand remained قلالُthe jars of النِرسِيانِal-Nirsiyan وَتَمرُهُand its dates
مُباحاًfreely available لمنto whoever بَينَamong الدِيارِthe dwellings الأَضافِرِal-Adafir
And al-Nirsiyan’s jars and dates remained
And the fruits of Persia and its date palms
free for those among the dwellings of al-Adafir.
Remained lawful booty for whoever’s grasp could seize them
أَبَحناwe laid open حِمىthe protected domain of قَومٍa people وَكانَand had been حِماهُمُtheir protected domain
حَراماًforbidden عَلىto مَنwhoever رامَهُsought it بِالعَساكِرِwith armies
We laid open a people’s protected domain, and their domain had been
We violated the sanctuary of a people whose sanctuary
forbidden to anyone who sought it with armies.
Had been inviolate against attack by armies
