أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَناyou see us غَداةَon the morning of المَقرِal-Maqr جِئناwe came
بِأَنهارٍat Anhar وَساكِنَهاand its inhabitants جِهاراopenly
Did you not see us, on the morning at al-Maqr, when we came
Did you not see us the morning we left the camp
to Anhar and its inhabitants, openly?
With rivers and those living by them panicking?
قَتَلناهُمُwe killed them بِهاin it ثُمَّthen اِنكَفَأناwe turned back
إِلىto يَمِّthe broad waters of الفُراتِthe Euphrates بِماwith those who اِستَجاراsought refuge
We killed them there, then turned back
We killed them with it then returned
to the broad waters of the Euphrates, with those who sought refuge.
To the banks of the Euphrates with whoever sought refuge.
لَقيناwe met مِنfrom among بَنيthe sons of الأَحرارِthe freeborn فيهاin it
فَوارِسَhorsemen ماnot يُريدونَthey wish الفِراراflight
There we met, among the sons of the freeborn,
We met there the free men's sons
horsemen who had no wish to flee.
Whose horses longed to flee.
نَكُرُّwe wheel back الخَيلَthe horses حابِسَةًhemming in عَلَيهِمagainst them
تَرىyou see فيناamong us مِنَfrom الطَعنِspear-thrusts اِزوِراراswerving aside
We wheeled the horses back against them, hemming them in;
We held back the horses, stabbing at them
you see us swerve aside under the spear-thrusts.
You could see our spears piercing violently.
وَماand not زِلناwe ceased بِهِمagainst them حَتّىuntil أَتَيناwe came
عَلىupon أُخراهُمthe last of them زَمَناًa span of time مُعاراborrowed
And we kept at them until we had wiped out
We did not stop until we came upon
the last of them, in a span of borrowed time.
The last of them, destroying their era.
