- الشعر لب المرء يعرضهPoetry is a man's intellect, which he reveals;
- إنا أناس تستنير جدودناWe are a people whose fortunes shine;
- إننا معشر خلقنا صدوراIndeed, we are a people created to be heads;
- إني إذا ما الخليل أحدث ليIndeed, whenever a close friend brings me
- تجرم لي بشر غداة أتيتهBishr found fault with me the morning I came to him;
- خليلي عوجا اليوم وانتظرانيMy two friends, turn aside today and wait for me;
- صرمتك ريطة بعد طول وصالRayta broke with you after a long union,
- فتن الشعبي لماAl-Shaʿbī was captivated when
- فلا تنكحن الدهر إن كنت ناكحاSo, if you would marry, never in all your days wed
- في كفه خيزران نشره عبقIn his palm is a bamboo cane, its fragrance sweet,
- قتلوا حسينا ثم هم ينعونهThey killed Husayn, then they mourn him.
- قفي قبل التفرق يا أماماStop before we part, O Umama,
- كأن مدامة صهباء صرفاAs though pure, tawny wine
- لا أعدم الذم حين أخطيI do not lack blame when I err,
- لسنا وإن أحسابنا كرمتWe are not, though our ancestry is noble,
- للغانيات بذي المجاز رسومAt Dhu al-Majaz are traces of the fair women;
- نام الخلي فنوم العين تسهيدThe carefree man has slept; the eye's sleep is sleeplessness.
- ورد تظل له السباع تطيعهA tawny lion—the beasts of prey continually obey him,
- ولست بقانع من كل فضلAnd of all distinctions, I am not content
- يا أيها الرجل المعلم غيرهO you man who teaches others,
- يا ريط هل لي عندكم نائلO Rayt, is there any favor for me with you?
