At Dhu al-Majaz are traces of the fair women;
For the songstresses with rhetorical eloquence
in Mecca's valley, their time there is long past.
Their customs in the valley of Mecca are ancient

And at Mina's slaughter-ground for garlanded offerings,
With the sacrificed camels garlanded at Mina
streaks appear as though they were tattoos.
Their trilling is renewed as if they are tattooed

They stirred my companion's tears, and I rebuked him,
He wept for my companions so I restrained him
while his tears streamed into his cloak.
While tears soaked his cloak silently

He said: "Wait, we will beg some food from Dimnah
where has Rumaym journeyed, for those who ask?
Where will sustenance come for the beseechers?"

I said: Turn away; questioning is obstinacy,
I said: "Turn back, begging is stubbornness
and among people are the foolish and the forbearing.
And people vary between ignorant and forbearing"

But he insisted on pursuing desire
to accomplish a purpose, by his allotted mind.
For the success of a matter destined

Love before its path is paved
is a lasting illness lodged within the ribs.
Is a disease lodged in the ribs to stay

Tell Rumaym, though we are far apart, that I
Convey to Rumaym in separation that I
keep close ties with loyal brothers, and firmly sever ties.
Am a stitcher of the garment of pure fraternity

I honor the trust of the trustworthy as it deserves,
I keep a trust safe for the trustee in truth
so he departs untainted, his secret concealed.
So he sees graciousness while his secret is hidden

And I strengthen the support of a rebuffed kinsman,
I support my patron lord though bankrupt
for fear of leaving him helpless, though he is blameworthy.
With tenderness against total loss and he is clement

but falls to me when a stubborn foe oppresses him.
While upon me my fierce opponent is tyrannical

The abject and the base are people
Verily the humiliated and base are a people
whose kinsman is belittled and oppressed.
Whose patron is the oppressed and downtrodden

And if you humiliate your brother or leave him alone
If you disgrace or isolate your brother
deliberately, you are the weak and blameworthy one.
Intentionally, then you are the disgraced and condemned

Do not follow the paths of foolishness and obscenity;
Do not follow the ways of vileness and treachery
the fool is rebuked and reviled.
Truly the fool is culpable and defamed

Be upright with those whose demeanor is singular
and one character: the noble man is steadfast.
Nobility, the generous ones are resolute

Do not prohibit a trait then do the same
if you do so, it is a great disgrace to you.
Disgrace upon you if you commit it, it is momentous

And if you see a man slandering himself
When you see a man restraining his soul
and chaste women, he has no claim to protection.
From inviolable women, he has no sanctuary

To the man who taunted me for poverty, I said: Be moderate;
Those ridiculing me for poverty, I told him: Be moderate
I stand ahead of you, long-seasoned in life.
For I am ahead of you in time since old

A base man of limited ambition may grow wealthy,
Loss may increase for one with little ambition
while a man's wealth dwindles though he is noble.
While wealth decreases for a man who is noble

You see me in places, if not to my liking
bearing grudges against them, ruthless.
Carrying burdens, with them I am preoccupied

Rather, I repelled many a dissenter
back upon his own head, till he yielded, base as he was.
Knocking him on the head, so he conceded though vile

He closed his eyes upon the sting of grit when I came to him,
I turned away feigning deafness to his nonsense
and my words left brands upon his nose.
My cheeks unaffected by what I say are tattooed

I ripened his disgrace so he remained bowed
amid the assembly, as though wounded through the skull.
Among the carpet sellers as if hired for prayer

Covering his head, ashamed, his loudest voice
Muffling his voice, loud before arguing
after his obstinate shouting was a faint moan.
Now faint after clamoring vociferously

Desist! No one seeks to match my strength,
I said: make it brief, I do not intend backing
O son of al-Jamuh, who is battered and slapped.
A son of obstinacy, signed and sealed

When drinking wine, find another excuse
other than me, over which a drinking mate may weary himself for you.
Rather than have a boon companion blame you

How do you fight me while your promise is submission?

Barren while devoid of chastity

My back was never a likely target for whips,
Never did my back expect the whip
at any time, as though I owed a debt to prescribed penalties.
For long, as if I am liable for punishment

What does Zuwaymilah of error seek?
What does the misguided striver intend?

You are an ignorant man who squandered his honor
You are a man who wasted your honor, ignorant
and ignorantly consented to be called sinful.
Satisfied in ignorance to be called sinful

high-spirited and resolute in formidable undertakings.
Resolute in strong command and determined

My poems are a source of pride, and my honor conquers,
My poems are pride and my glory dominant
unassailable, towering above the mountains, immense.
Loftily rising over mountains, massive

lofty summits and a vast, trackless desert.
The pillar of progeny, my clan of Khazima a foundation

holds fast to me, I would indeed tire too readily.
Until I die without saying intimate

For one exiled from me who dies without it
and condemn whoever is harmful in friendship.
A man deprived of guidance is deprived

He meets vileness blaming one who intends nobility
a scion: Khuzaymah is my stronghold and pure stock.
Ignorantly, while the warp of his reed-pipe is knotted

The hypocrite's deed remained, causing perdition
until I die; nor will I call a close friend
In his religion, while his hypocrisy is known

Just yesterday it was hostage to mortality
A man denied guidance is truly deprived.
If only that state lasted and remained

With girls like pearls, purest complexion
ignorantly, while his own spear-shaft is flawed.
Chastely nourished, together in bliss

The hypocrite's conduct: he keeps slandering the discerning man
Without unconscious sin or forbidden matter
in his faith, while his own hypocrisy is known.

This—and if I come to be hostage to death,
Verily I crossed the valley, below me a bridge
I have indeed enjoyed myself—if only that could last—
Daring, furthest end of the path convoluted

Bearing two crosses, raising its gear
by the sheltered care and comfort in which they were reared,
A firm pole, utterly redolent and smeared

and with a brother beside me, yielding toward a friend.
Darkening their gums, all of them coarse

tail-swishing after night travel, massive.
Barren, entering knee joints fruitless

Slender with its bobbing and swinging
by lofty withers and a tall, fat-packed hump.
From the dripping of its dangling rear, thickened gum

A doe, as if its wraps are cotton
dark at the soles, all of them battered.
Tied atop its snout, wrinkled

Thrust straight ahead, taking long strides through the night,
I mount it when dusk falls on the desert
firm-fleshed, close-knit of vertebrae, barren.
A night like the color of a fox, hazy

Swift-striding, with her nape and neck swaying,
It brings down the stars, as if
the tar lies in streaks from the sweat behind her ears.
It encompassed governance and the excellent dark

Rushing, it seems as if they
cotton piled upon the top of her muzzle.
Are drunk from weariness, confused

When it neighs, it is as if
a night black as a taylasan cloak.
Its bones are connected to others' bones in the bridle, rugged

I have witnessed horses carrying my love
a male ostrich carries the saddlecloth and saddle frames.
A gaze I incline to when it neighs, defeated

فَكأَنَّهُنَّso they seem مِنfrom الكَلالَةِexhaustion هِيمُthirst-maddened
Following in succession, they climb with drooping chins,
It pounds the ground when its flank trembles
as though exhaustion had made them thirst-maddened.
And it revolves after fervor, fervent
وَلَهاand for her إِذاwhen الحِرباءُthe chameleon ظَلَّstands كَأَنَّهُas though it were

خَصمٌa litigant يُنازِعُهُdispute with him القُضاةthe judges خصيمُcontentious
And hers, when the chameleon stands as though
It ostricizes the stallions when they clash at its bridle
a contentious litigant wrangling with the judges,
Restless traveller, and girth rubbed raw
عَنسٌa mature she-camel كَأَنَّas though عِظامَهاher bones مَوصولَةٌjoined

بِعِظامِto the bones of أُخرىanother فيunder الزِّمامِthe halter سَعومُswift-striding
is a sturdy she-camel, her bones seemingly joined
When after calm it rises on the lookout
to another's bones, swift under the halter.
I show it permanence and composure
وَلَقَدand indeed شَهِدتُI witnessed الخَيلَthe cavalry يَحمِلُcarries شِكَّتيmy arms
طِرفٌa noble steed أَجَشُّrough-voiced إِذاwhen وَنينَthey tire هَزيمُswift
And I have witnessed the cavalry, my arms carried by
Its forerunners it guides halting in the morning
a noble steed, rough-voiced, swift when the others tire.
And the mark shows atop its forehead
رَبِذُswift القَوائِمِof legs حينَwhen يَندىgrows wet عِطفُهhis flank
وَيَمورُand surges مِنfrom بعدِafter الحَميمِsweat حَميمُsweat
Swift of legs when his flank grows wet,
Its legs lengthened and its muscling perfected
and sweat surges after sweat.
And the rest of its build sturdy
يَنفيhe drives away الجِيادَthe steeds إِذاwhen اِصطَكَكنَthey collide بِمأزِمin a narrow pass

He drives the steeds aside when they collide in a narrow pass,
Snorting, its nostrils spray pebbles
shaking saddle and girth, biting fiercely.
As if its scattering were knots, congealed
وَإِذاand when عَلتthey climb مِنfrom بَعدِafter وَهدٍa hollow مَرقَباًa lookout

And when they climb from a hollow to a lookout,
Of pleasant grace, its fall scatters rocks
a trackless plain and rugged heights lie before them.
And with them the branded are stigmatized
يَهديleads أَوائِلَهاtheir foremost ranks المُوَقَّفُthe white-marked horse غُدوَةًin the morning
وَيَلوحُand shines فَوقَabove جَبينِهhis brow التسويمُthe distinguishing mark
The white-marked steed leads their foremost ranks at dawn,
It is as if emerging from the back of absence when it appears
and his distinguishing mark shines above his brow.
A mirage floating in a vision swims
طالَتgrew long قَوائِمُهhis legs وَتَمَّand grew complete تَليلُهhis neck
وَاِبتَزَّand outstripped سائِرَthe rest of خَلقِهhis frame الحَيزومُthe chest
His legs are long, his neck fully formed,
Firm of rein, it commands lightly, a frame
and his chest dominates the rest of his frame.
Clinging to the axe of the bit, knotted
مُسحَنفِرٌcharging تُذريscatter سَنابِكُهhis hooves الحَصىthe pebbles
فَكأنَّso it is as though تَذراهُwhat he scatters نَوىًfruit stones مَعجومُgnawed
Charging forward, his hooves scatter pebbles,
It plunges like a bucket surrendered by the well rope
as though what he scatters were gnawed fruit stones.
So it bolted and its tether is severed
ذوpossessing رَونَقٍluster يَذريscatters الحِجارَةَthe stones وَقعُهُhis tread

وَبِهِنَّand on them للمتوسِّمينَfor close observers كُلومُwounds
Lustrous, his tread scatters stones,
Consecutive, sturdy, as if its neigh
and on them are scars for those who inspect.
Is a bell containing its voice in the gullet
فَكأَنَّهُso he seems مِنfrom ظَهرِbeyond غَيبٍthe unseen إِذwhen بَداhe appears

As though, when he emerges from beyond the unseen,
Its constitution like an eagle's, its chest prominent
he were an ostrich racing, swimming through the mirage.
Broad of ribs and sturdy of shoulder
هَزِجُlively القِيادِunder the reins أمرَّtightly twisted شَزراًcrosswise هَيكَلٌmassive

Lively under the reins, tautly cross-twisted, massive,
Tossing in zeal when roused
headstrong, biting hard on the bridle's blade.
Like the hacking of dry wood, foul
يَهويhe plunges هَويَّthe plunge of الدلوِthe bucket أسلمهاlet it go العُرىthe loops

He plunges like a bucket released by its loops,
Not one of the family of crookedness, weak and thin
falling straight down with its rope severed.
Withered nor growth of vegetation odious
مُتَتابِعٌsuccessive in stride كَفِتٌswift كَأَنَّas though صَهيلَهُhis neigh

جَرسٌa ringing sound تَضَمَّنَenclosed صَوتَهُits sound الحُلقومُthe throat
Swift, with stride following stride; his neigh seems
Lashing its tail, it does not restrain its intensity
a ringing sound enclosed within his throat.
An axe prepared for it together and muscular
صُلبُhard النسورِof hoof-frogs لَهُhe has مَعَدٌّa flank مُجفِرٌspacious

Hard of hoof-frogs, with a capacious flank,
The females' coyness, rubbing the ground, contracting
long-ribbed, with compact withers.
With the scowl of the fearful lip, tattooed
مُتَقاذِفٌbounding فيin الشَّدِّthe gallop حينَwhen تَهيجُهyou rouse him

كَتقاذُفِlike the surging of الحِسيthe waterhole الخَسيفdeep طَميمُbrimming
Bounding in his gallop when you rouse him,
It casts its eyes about in panic and its Lord
like the surging of a deep waterhole, brimming full.
Sits in fear at times and stands at others

Of A'waj's line, not weak or brittle,
It came in the morning neighing and rotating
spindly, nor stunted and ill-favored in growth.
A day producing heavy clouds from spring, clouded

فَأسٌa bit-blade أُعِدَّprepared لَهُfor him مَعاًtogether وَشَكيمُand a mouthpiece
Sharp of hoof; his mettle is not restrained
by the bit-blade fitted for him together with its mouthpiece.

Taut of hamstring, with flowing mane and tail, long-legged,
resolute at the narrows of the dreaded frontier.

He casts both eyes along the passes, while his master,
in fear, now sits and now stands.

Like a falcon at dawn on high ground, enveloped
by a cloudy day pouring freely with spring rain.
