Today your neighbors have resolved upon departure,
Your neighbor was very patient today
and their camel-drivers urged the camels onward with them.
And urged their camels on insistently

They showed no pity to the one they had afflicted with love; instead,
But the camels did not come to those who loaded them
their caravan bore them away in haste.
Rather their caravan quickly left with them

Separation severed the bonds of a clan
It cut the rope of the living tribe
that departed from its dwellings and moved away.
Who had endured the departure from their dwellings

who deems it lawful to kill me without shedding blood.
Whose killing seemed lawful without shedding blood

Umayya, on the day at Dar al-Qasr, begrudged
Umayya, when we were in the palace of Qasr
us any gift she might bestow.
Resented that we looked to her for sustenance

She drew near until, when I said, “She has been generous,”
She drew near until when I spoke she was generous
she then redoubled her stinginess and excuses.
Later she resented with stinginess and sickness

By your life, Umayya is nothing but a fawn
By your life, Umayya is none other than miserly
whose covert's shade drew near, so it rested at noon.
The shade of the churches came near her so she spoke

you see its first rain rush along in torrents.

they repay you, after bitter estrangement, with an illusion.
And the heart's passion begets anxiety

when a north wind blows with piercing cold;
Returns to Dhahlan and superiority

when counted, and the strongest in their bonds.

The sale of regret came, so you rose
وَتَيمُand Taym اللَّهِAllah حَيٌّa tribe حَيُّa tribe of صِدقٍtrue worth
وَلَكِنَّbut الرَّحىthe millstone تَعلوstands above الثِّفالاits leather underlay
And Taym Allah is a tribe, a tribe of true worth,
Carry me, Ibn Rabia's eulogy
but the millstone stands above its leather mat.
And grant it a gift that went astray
أَعِكرِمَO ‘Ikrim كُنتَI was كالمبتاعِlike a purchaser بَيعاًa purchase
أَتىmade بيعَa bargain of الندامَةِregret فاِستَقالاthen sought its cancellation
O ‘Ikrim, I was like one making a purchase
You fell short of what I hoped for from you
who struck a bargain of regret, then asked to undo it.
Like the glance of one who looked then turned away
أَقِلنيrelease me from ياO ابنَson of رَبعيّRab‘i ثنائيmy praise
وهَبهاand reckon it مِدحَةًa panegyric ذهبتwent ضَلالاastray
Release me, son of Rab‘i, from my praise,
I tried praising you but you did not reward me
and reckon it a panegyric squandered in vain.
And I left no room for other eulogizers
تفاوتنيoutstripped me عَمايَmy blindness بِهاabout it وَكانَتand it was
كَنظرةِlike the glance of مَنsomeone who تَفَرَّسlooked discerningly ثُمَّthen مالاturned aside
My blindness about it got the better of me; it was
So I will never be a loyal friend
like the glance of one who looked keenly, then turned aside.
If his company does not provide rewards
حَبَوتُكَI bestowed upon you بِالثَّناءِpraise فَلَمbut you did not تَثُبنيreward me
وَلَمand I did not أَترُكleave لِمُمتَدِحٍfor a praiser مَقالاanything to say
I bestowed praise upon you, but you did not reward me,
and I left no other praiser anything to say.
فَلَستُso I am not بِواصلٍmaintaining ties with أَبَداًever خَليلاa friend
إِذاif لَمnot تُغنِbenefits خُلَّتُهhis friendship قِبالاa sandal-strap
I shall never maintain ties with a friend
if his friendship offers not even a sandal-strap's worth.
