الشِّعرُpoetry لُبُّthe intellect المَرءِof a man يعرِضُهhe reveals it
الشِّعرُ لُبُّ المَرءِ يعرِضُه
وَالقَولُand speech مِثلُlike مَواقِعِthe landing places of النَّبلِthe arrows
وَالقَولُ مِثلُ مَواقِعِ النَّبلِ
Poetry is a man's intellect, which he reveals;
Poetry is the essence of a person laid bare
And speech is like the landing of arrows:
And words are like the release of arrows
مِنهاamong them المُقَصِّرُthe one falling short عَنof رميَّتِهِits target
مِنها المُقَصِّرُ عَن رميَّتِهِ
وَنَوافِذٌand piercing ones يُذهِبنَthey carry away بالخَصلِwith the prize
وَنَوافِذٌ يُذهِبنَ بالخَصلِ
Some fall short of their target,
Some fall short of their target
And others pierce through and carry off the prize.
While others pierce straight through the mark
