- أخي وأخوك ببطن النسيرMy brother and your brother are in the valley of al-Nusayr;
- إذا ما تدبرت الأمور تبينتWhen you ponder affairs, there stand revealed
- أفاطم قبل بينك متعينيO Fatim, before your departure, let me enjoy your company.
- ألا إن هنداً أمس رث جديدهاLo, Hind's fresh love grew threadbare yesterday,
- ألا تلك العمود تصد عناLo, that tribe turns away from us,
- ألا حييا الدار المحيل رسومهاCome, you two—salute the dwelling whose traces are effaced.
- ألا من مبلغ عدوان عنيAh, who will carry a message from me to ʿAdwān?
- إن الأمور إذا استقبلتها اشتبهتIndeed, matters seem unclear when you first encounter them;
- تهزأت عرسي واستنكرتMy wife mocked and disapproved of
- داويته بالمحض حتى شتاI nursed him with pure milk until he wintered,
- ذاد عنى النوم هم بعد همWorry after worry drove sleep away from me,
- ظعائن لا توفي بهن ظعائنWomen in howdahs whom no other women in howdahs can match,
- غلبت ملوك الأرض بالحزم والنهىYou have surpassed the kings of the earth through resolve and wisdom.
- فبات يجتاب شقارى كماSo he spent the night traversing Shuqārā, just as
- فلا يدعني قومي لنصر عشيرتيSo let my people not call upon me to aid my clan,
- لعمرك إنني وأبا رياحBy your life, as for me and Abu Riyah—
- هل عند غان لفؤادHas a fair maiden, for a thirsty heart,
- وجاءت جيأل وأبو بنيهاAnd a she-hyena came, with the father of her cubs,
- وسار تعناه المبيت فلم يدعAnd a night traveler, troubled by the need for lodging, was denied
- وقد تخذت رجلي إلى جنب غرزهاAnd my foot has made beside her stirrup
- وللموت خير للفتى من حياتهAnd death is indeed better for a young man than his life,
- يطيف بنصبهم حجن صغارSmall, bent figures circle their idol;
