My wife mocked and disapproved of
My marriage was mocked and my grey hair condemned
My gray hair; she shows unfairness and aversion.
Therein lies spite and denial
لاdo not تُكثِريincrease هُزءاًmockery وَلاand do not تَعجَبيbe astonished
فَلَيسَfor there is no بِالشَيبِin gray hair عَلىupon المَرءِa man عارdisgrace
Do not mock so much, nor be astonished,
Do not mock overly or be astonished
For gray hair is no disgrace to a man.
Grey hair brings a man no shame

By your life, do you know that a young man's
Do you know your youth
Youth is a garment lent to him?
His youth is a borrowed garb

And I see no wealth unless there is
I see no wealth unless there be
Fine chainmail, a swaying spear, and a sturdy, firmly built steed,
Swaying, Adventure, and Protective Shelter

High at both ends, stout of limb,
With legs astride the two rain spouts
With bowed hind legs and a lean, taut frame.
Bent legs showing decrepitude
وَأَطرُقُand I visit by night الحانِيَّthe tavern keeper فيin بَيتِهِhis house

And I visit the tavern keeper by night in his house,
The tavern keeper in his house
With drinking companions, until we make free with the wine.
Drinks until possessions are violated

So that was a time now past; and the young man
That time has passed and the youth
Is carried away by his nights and the day.
Twists his nights and days with it
لاnot يَنفَعُbenefits الهارِبَthe fugitive إيغالُهُhis going far

وَلاand not يُنَجّيsaves ذاthe possessor of الحَذارِcaution الحَذارcaution
The fugitive gains nothing by going far,
Fleeing does not benefit the fugitive
Nor does caution save the cautious man.
Nor does caution deliver those who are cautious
