- أبلغن أهلنا ولا تخف عنهمTell our people, and hold nothing back from them:
- أتعجب أن رأيت علي ديناDo you wonder that you have seen me in debt,
- أحبك يا جنان وأنت منيI love you, O Jinan, and you are to me
- أعجلتنا فأتاك عاجل برناYou hurried us, so our hastily given bounty came to you,
- ألا أيها الزوار لا يد عندكمListen, O visitors: I have done you no favor;
- ألم ترني حين حال الزمانHave you not seen me, when the times changed?
- إني امرؤ كسروي الفعالI am a man, Khosrow-like in deeds.
- أوصيك خيرا به فإن لهI commend him to your good care, for he possesses
- بين الصبابة والهجران مطروحCast down between ardor and abandonment,
- خلق الرقيب على الحبيب بليةThe watcher was created to be the lover’s affliction;
- رب يوم قطعت لا بمدامMany a day I passed, not with wine,
- رجال لا تهولهم المناياMen whom death itself cannot daunt,
- ضر الهوىفي جسد العاشقLove’s ravages upon the lover’s body
- طلب المعاش مفرقSeeking a livelihood brings separation
- عاقني عن وداعك الأشغالAffairs kept me from bidding you farewell,
- فلو أنا إذا متنا تركناIf, when we died, we were simply left alone,
- لا تفخرن بلحيةNever boast of a beard,
- نبارز أبطال الوغى فنبيدهمWe duel with the champions of battle, then annihilate them.
- نحن قوم تليننا الأعين النجلWe are a people whom wide eyes soften,
- نقتنص الآساد في غيلهاWe hunt down lions in their thickets,
- يا سوأتا لفتى له أدبAlas, what shame for a youth possessed of refinement:
