I love you, O Jinan, and you are to me

I love you, O soul, and you are mine

as the soul is to a coward’s body.

The place of the soul embodied in the coward

ولو أني أقول مكان روحي

ولو أني أقول مكان روحي

خشيت عليك بادرة الزمان

خشيت عليك بادرة الزمان

And were I to say, “As my own soul,”

And if I say where my soul is

I would fear for you a sudden blow of fate,

I feared for you the vicissitudes of time

لإقدامي إذا ما الخيل كرت

لإقدامي إذا ما الخيل كرت

وهاب كماتها حرَّالطعان

وهاب كماتها حرَّالطعان

because of my bold advance when the horses charge

For my audacity if the horses attack

and their warriors dread the heat of spear-thrusts.

And dawn like its stabbing is hot
