الزبرقان بن بدر

أتيناك كيما يعلم الناس فضلنا

We came to you so that people may know our merit

إني امرء عيصي بشوكته

Roses are red

أظل بيتي أم حسناء ناعمة

My beloved's house I passed, or was it a graceful gazelle

وعبد من ذوي قيس أتاني

A man of Qays's clan came to me,

الله أعطاني وأنعم

God gave me and bestowed

سعد بن زيد كثير إن عددتهم

Saad, son of Zaid, are many if I count them

يهدي الخميس نجادا في مطالعها

The Thursday brings a deer at dawn

أتدري من منعت ورود حوض

Do you know who denied the flowers water

من مبلغ عمرو بن نعمان إنما

Who will inform Amr ibn Nu'man that

أقفي الرقيب أداويه وأصنعه

I stand guard and tend to him, crafting his form

وفيت بذمة القيسي لما

And I fulfilled the pledge of al-Qaysi when

وفيت بأذواد الرسول وقد أبت

أخوك الذي لا ينقض الدهر عهده

Your brother whose covenant time does not annul

ومن الموالي موليان فمنهما

Among the loyal there are two loyal men

مقطوطيا يشتم الأقوام ظالمهم

Like a tender sapling reproaching the tyrant oppressors,

فجاءوا بفأس ذات خلفين مكنت

They brought an axe with a double blade that empowered

طوى كل معروف وأحضر دونه

He folded away all kindness, and brought forth instead

أغشى المهالك بالرجال ولا

The brave are shrouded by death's veil, yet I

ألم أك باذلا ودي ونصري

Was I not generous with my love and aid?

آليت لله حجا حافيا رجلا

I have gone on pilgrimage to God barefoot

أبعد بشر أسيرا في بيوتهم

A captive beyond hope in their dwellings,

فبتلك أقضي الهم إذ وهمت به

And so I put to rest my worries, when

وفيت بأذواد النبي محمد

I fulfilled the promises of Prophet Muhammad

وماء قديم عهده ما يرى به

With water ancient, oft unseen but by

ساروا إلينا بنصف الليل فاحتملوا

They came to us at midnight bearing their burdens

آليت لا أبكي على هالك

I vowed I would not weep over a perished one

وبردا ابن ماء المزن عمي اكتساهما

With the cold of the son of Muzn's water I clothed them both,

وإن أك من كعب بن سعد فإنني

And if I am of Ka'b bin Sa'd then I am

تراه كأن الله يجدع أنفه

نحن الكرام فلا حي يعادلنا

فيالله لولا أنت بالغيب لم اجيء
