ولما نزلنا شيحة الرمل أعرضت

When we descended the sandy hill, she turned away

لعمري لئن كنتم على النأي والقلى

By my life, though you are far away on the horizon,

فلله دري أي نظرة ذي هوى

For God knows which glances of passion I cast

سقى الله أياما لنا ولياليا

God has watered for us days and nights

إلى الله أشكو نية يوم قرقري

I complain to God of the intention on the day my camel saddle creaked,

خليلي إن قابلتما الهضب أوبدا

My friend, if you meet the plateau or begin

خليلي قوما أشرفا القصر فانطرا

My friends, arise to the palace's heights and look

فإن تنكحوها عامرا لاطلاعكم

If you marry her, while knowing ‘Aamir

تعز بصبر لاوجدك لا ترى

Take solace in patience, though you do not find me, do not see me,

كلي التمر حتى تهرم النخل واضفري

Pick all the dates until the palm tree grows old and withers,

دعوت زماما للهوى فأجابني

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.

ولم آت البيوت مطنبات

I did not come to the houses adorned

إذا نأت لم تفارقني علاقتها

If you come to me, do not abandon our bond,

عرفت اليوم بالأسناد دارا

Today I learned of a house through stories,

فواحسرتي لم أقض منك لبانة

Oh how I regret that I did not enjoy more of your sweetness

ألا من لقلب قد أصيبت مقاتله

Alas! For a heart whose love has been wounded

هل تجزيني العامرية موقفي

Does the mansion now criticize my stand

خليلي إني واقف فمسلم

My friend, I stand still, so stop

إذا ما أتتنا الريح من نحو أرضكم

When the wind blows from your land towards us

رأتني الغواني قد ترديت شملة

The maidens saw me in tattered clothes,

أرى الدهر بالتفريق والبين مولعا

I see time insisting on parting and distance

ألا تسألان الله أن يسقي الحمى

Do you not ask God to water the fevered land?

ألا من لنفس مستخف جليدها

Alas, who has a frivolous soul

وحنت قلوصي بعد هدء صبابة

My heart yearned silently after youth's clamor,

كداء الشجا بين الوريدين كلما

The grief between the veins whenever

أنت المخاطب أيها الإنسان

You are the one addressed, O human

يا صاحبي أطال الله رشدكما

O my friend, may God prolong your guidance

ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلة بسعد

Alas! I wonder, did they spend a night in Sa'd

ألا أيها الصمد الذي كنت مرة

O Eternal One, who once upon a time

أقول لصاحبي والعيس تهوى

I say to my companion while the night birds cry,

ألا يا جراد الغور هل أنت مبلغ

حلفت بدار الصير ما كفه الغضى

فلا تيأسن الدهر من وصل كاشح

خليلي عوجا منكم اليوم أودعا

لعمرك ما ريا بذات أمانة

سقى الله أطلالا بأكثبة الحمى

ألا من لعين لا ترى قلل الحمى

وقاء ما معية من أبيه

خليلي هل يستخبر الأثل والغضى

ونبئت ليلى أرسلت بشفاعة

أإن سجعت في بطن واد حمامة

نظرت وطرف العين يتبع الهوى

تواهس أصحابي حديثا لقيته

أصبحت مالي من عز ألوذبه
