أكدنا ومن أرسى ثبيرا مكانه

We asserted, and he who pitched his tent in its place

فما بين الردى والأمن إلا

Roaming between peril and safety

فإن استك الكرماء عيب وعورة

For truly, reliance upon the noble is a defect and flaw

حال الشجا دون طعم العيش والسهر

The suffering of the anxious kept the taste of life and wakefulness away

أمن رسوم ديار هاجك القدم

Is it from the ruins of an abode that your footsteps were stirred

ألا أبلغا صخرا فإني لم أكن

Shall I not inform a rock, for I was not

وماذا غير أنك ذو سبال

What else but that you are of noble roots,

وأنتم أناس تقمصون من القنا

You are people donning robes of arrogance

أتى ابن مخراق ليقضي نذره

The son of Mikhraq came to fulfill his vow

من رأى مدركا غداة التقينا

Homesick

وإلا جئت نعنعها بقول

And if not, I would come wooing her with words

كلانا غني عن أخيه حياته

Each of us is independent of the other in his life

لعمر أبيك يا صخر بن ليلى

By the life of your father, O Sakhr, son of Layla

إذا أنت عاديت امرأ فاظفر له

If you oppose a man, then help him

لعمرك إني لابن زروان إذ عوى

By your life, when Ibn Zarwan took refuge

وما كل حين يصدق المرء ظنه

Not every time does man's guess prove true,

فإن يك عارا ما لقيت فربما

Though shame I've met is grievous for me, still

بلونا فضل مالك يا ابن ليلى

We tested the favor of your friend O son of Layla

تأطرن بالميناء ثم جزعنه

Framed by the harbor, then laid bare,

أقول له وأنكر بعض شأني

I say to him and he denied some of my affair

نفسي فداء أخي الحفيظة مدرك

My soul is ransom for my brother, the vigilant one,

وفي الدهر والأيام للمرء عبرة

In life and in days, there are lessons for man,

قل للمهلب قد وقيت نفوسنا

Tell the afflicted one you have preserved our souls

أبوك أبي وأنت أخي ولكن

My friend, your father is my father, and you are my brother, but

ليت شعري وللأمور قرار

Would that I knew if things would stabilize,

وما حسن أن يمدح المرء نفسه

It is not befitting that a man should praise himself,

سبقت الرجال الباهشين إلى العلا

You surpassed aspiring men in seeking glory

يا عمرو لا تلقى المفضل بعدها

O Amr, do not meet Mufaddal again

كأن مساحق الغرقي فيها

As though the drowned one's powders in it

وبالقصر يوم الخنجان حملته

In the palace, the day of sadness, I carried him

أزياد إنك والذي أنا عبده

Oh Ziyad, I swear by Him whom I worship

لولا قعود الدهر بي عنك لم يكن

Had not the days kept me from you, nothing

أرى الناس قد ملوا الفعال ولا أرى

I see people have grown weary of good deeds, yet

ومثلي إذا ما الدار يوما نبت به

When trouble springs within the house I dwell

إذا قطري جاءني مرجحنة

If a Qatari comes to me on a swing,

يعلمنا المهلب كل يوم

The tyrant teaches us each day

إذا المرء أثرى ثم قال لقومه

When a man enriches himself then says to his people,

إذا ما رفيقي لم يكن خلف ناقتي

If my companion were not behind my camel,

إني هزئت من ام الغمر إذ هزئت

I was mocked by the mother of darkness when she mocked

يقولون ذبب يا زياد ولم يكن

They say Ziyad was asleep in the raging battle,

جميل المحيا بختري إذا مشى

The handsome Bukhari is graceful when he walks,

خذ من أخيك العفو واغفر ذنوبه

Take forgiveness from your brother and forgive his sins

لا تلومي على القتال عريبا

وما لاقى ذليل من عزيز

دعاك شقي للشقاء فوارسا

وما كذبت في دستبارين شدتي

لقد كنت أسعى في هواك وأبتغي

لحى الله أنآنا عن الضيف بالقرى

وما الفقر يزري بالرجال ولا الغنى

سأترك منزلي لبني تميم

إن المهالب قوم إن مدحتهم

إني امرؤ حنظلي حين تنسبني

ألا من مبلغ صخر بن ليلى

قرت العين بالذي حدث الصعب
