1. Though shame I've met is grievous for me, still
Perchance the man is smit with bane one day
١. فَإِن يَكُ عاراً ما لَقيتُ فَرُبَّما
أَتى المَرءَ يَومَ السوءِ مِن حَيثُ لا يَدري
2. From whence he knows not; I have never seen
A life of wealth that does not change and fail;
٢. وَلَم أَرَ ذا عَيشٍ يَدومُ وَلا أَرى
زَمانَ الغِنى إِلّا قَريباً مِنَ الفَقرِ
3. Nor opulence of riches that is not
Near poverty and straitness after all.
٣. وَمَن يَفتَقِر يَعلَم مَكانَ صَديقِهِ
وَمَن يَحيَ لا يُعدَم بَلاءً مِنَ الدَهرِ
4. Whoever lacking means must know the place
Where dwells his friend; he whom life leaves will never
٤. وَإِنّي لِأَستَحيي إِذ كُنتُ مُعسِراً
صَديقَيَّ وَالخِلّانُ أَن يَعلَموا عُسري
5. Lack troubles sent him from the course of Time.
I am ashamed, whenmeansdefaulted me,
٥. وَأَهجُرُ خِلّاني وَما خانَ عَهدي
حَياءً وَإِكراماً وَما بي مِن كبرِ
6. That friends of mine and intimates should know
My want. So I withdrew from intimates
٦. وَأَكرِمُ نَفسي أَن تُرى بي حاجَةٌ
إِلى أَحَدٍ دوني وَإِن كانَ ذا وَفرِ
7. And dear companions, not for pride in me
Or honour, but from self-respect; too much
٧. وَلَمّا رَأَيتُ المالَ قَد حِيلَ دونَهُ
وَصَدَّت وُجوهٌ دونَ أَرحامِها البُترِ
8. I prize myself to let my wants be seen.
And when I saw that riches were debarred me
٨. جَعَلتُ حَليفَ النَفسِ عَضباً وَنَثرَةً
وَأَزرَقَ مَشحوذاً كَخافِيَةِ النَّسرِ
9. And faces turned from me, of kith and kin,
I made my sweetest friend wrath and displeasure,
٩. وَلا خَيرَ في عَيشِ أَمرىءٍ لا تَرى لَهُ
وَظيفَةَ حَقٍّ في ثَناءٍ وَفي أَجرِ
