هل عند غان لفؤاد

Is there a love who can heal a heartbroken heart

ظعائن لا توفي بهن ظعائن

The doe's eyes do not fulfill the doe's eyes,

فلا يدعني قومي لنصر عشيرتي

Let not my people leave me to aid my tribe,

ألا من مبلغ عدوان عني

O Woe! None to carry tidings unto thee

تهزأت عرسي واستنكرت

My marriage was mocked and my grey hair condemned

وقد تخذت رجلي إلى جنب غرزها

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.

داويته بالمحض حتى شتا

I nursed him with pure milk until he grew,

وجاءت جيأل وأبو بنيها

The she-camels came with their calves,

إن الأمور إذا استقبلتها اشتبهت

When faced with matters, they seem perplexed,

لعمرك إنني وأبا رياح

For your life! Abū Ḥiyāḍ and I

غلبت ملوك الأرض بالحزم والنهى

You have overcome the kings of earth with wisdom and great command

أفاطم قبل بينك متعيني

Afatim before you two have delighted me,

فبات يجتاب شقارى كما

So he spent the night wandering among thorn bushes,

وللموت خير للفتى من حياته

Death is better for the youth than his life

ذاد عنى النوم هم بعد هم

Sleep was driven away from me by cares after cares,

وسار تعناه المبيت فلم يدع

Weary of night's gloom, a traveller found no rest.

أخي وأخوك ببطن النسير

إذا ما تدبرت الأمور تبينت

ألا تلك العمود تصد عنا

ألا إن هنداً أمس رث جديدها

ألا حييا الدار المحيل رسومها

يطيف بنصبهم حجن صغار
