- أبلغ عديا حيث صار بها النوىTell ʿAdiyy, wherever distance has carried them,
- أطلقت من شيبان سبعين عانياI freed seventy captives of Shayban.
- أقول وقد بزت بتعشار بزةI say, when booty had been seized at Tiʿshār,
- ألا أيها المهدي إلي وعيدهListen, you who send me your threat:
- إني أنا ابن جلا إن كنت تنكرنيIndeed, I am Ibn Jalā, if you do not recognize me,
- تخال أفواههم أحراح نسوتهمYou would take their mouths for their women's vulvas,
- عفت ذات السلاسل بعد سلمىDhat al-Salasil's traces have faded after Salma,
- فخرتم بيوم الشيطين وغيركمYou boasted of the day of al-Shayyitayn, though others
- فدى لقومي ما جمعت من نشبMay all the wealth I have amassed be a ransom for my people,
- لقد كان في يوم النباج وثيتلThere was indeed, on the day of al-Nibāj and Thaytal,
- لولا الإله ومسعى من يطالبهاWere it not for God and the striving of the one who seeks her,
- ناديت زيدا فلم أفزع إلى وكلI called to Zayd, and did not turn for help to a weakling,
- نجى ابن نعمان عوفا من أسنتنا‘Awf son of Nu‘man was saved from our spearheads
- وتنفر من عمرو ببيداء ناقتيMy she-camel shies away from Amr in a barren wilderness,
