- أحببت إن أهزل جذلاناI wished to jest joyfully,
- إذا كنت تخشى منكرا وحسابهIf you fear Munkar and his reckoning,
- أشكو اليك عسى ترق لمهجةI complain to you, may you be moved by the ardour
- إن ابن يحيى وان فاق الورى كرماIndeed, Ibn Yahya, though he surpasses all people in generosity,
- إن طاها شرع الدين وفيIndeed, Taha established the faith, and in
- إن قلبا أخفى الغرام زماناIndeed, a heart that concealed its passion for a time—
- أهم بأمر الحزم في كل موطنI set my mind on resolute action in every situation,
- بنى كبة قد اصلح اللَه فيكمO sons of Kubba, God has indeed, through you, set right
- رام العذول بان اخفي الهوى سفهاThe reproacher foolishly wanted me to conceal my love;
- صبراً جميلاً فلعل وعسىPatience, beautiful patience, perhaps and maybe
- غني كاسمه عن كل نعتGhani, self-sufficient as his name suggests, needs no epithet.
- قد كان دون البرايا لي أخو ثقةI once had, apart from all others, a brother I trusted.
- لا كف واكف غيث فيك قد وكفاMay the streaming rain that has poured upon you never cease,
- لي بالثوية لو تواصل ظبيةAt al-Thawiyya I have a gazelle—if only she would keep in touch;
- لي مجد دون الأنام عليI alone among humankind possess lofty glory,
- وإني من قوم يبين بطفلهمAnd I am of a people in whose infant there appears
- وخيرية جاءت من الهند بغتةAnd a charitable gift came suddenly from India,
- ومنكر قتل شهيد الورىAnd one who denies killing the martyr of humankind—
- وهبني جلست على مسندAnd suppose I sat upon a seat,
