    I wished to jest joyfully,

    And sway my shoulder, drunk with joy,

    And remove humiliation from my shoulder,

    And ride Kaywan in glory,

    And humiliate whoever subjected me,

    Among mankind, to humiliation and abandonment.

    ولم أشد للمجد بنيانا

    Otherwise, I have no ambition for eminence,

    Nor have I built an edifice for glory;

    على الورى سراً واعلانا

    Nor have I a record of generosity

    Toward mankind, in secret and openly;

    عنى عنواناً فعنوانا

    Nor has the narrator recounted words of wisdom

    From me, heading after heading;

    مني امثال الذي كانا

    Nor have the deeds my father wrought

    Found their counterparts in mine;

    Nor have I let my cloak trail long in a raid

    That I launch with horses and riders,

    Racing one another like vultures of the wilderness,

    Folding up its plains and rugged ground.

    Whenever they race, onlookers take them

    For eagles in the sky, bound for a goal.

    تلوي عنان الريح خسرانا

    The wind never raced them without turning back,

    Reining the wind back in defeat;

    إلا وأوهت منه أركانا

    Nor did they race with lightning on a track

    Without weakening its pillars;

    Nor did thought run in their tracks

    Without their exhausting it on the course.

    They carry lions to war, though

    At the prayer niche they are monks.

    As though the steeds were created beneath them,

    Or the men were created as horsemen for war.

    Bright-faced, when battle's fire is kindled

    And gleaming swords and spears clash,

    You see them, with dust above them,

    Like meteors in deeds and hues.

    They saw the rights of glory cast aside

    And plundered through injustice and aggression.

    Then they sprang up swiftly in their defense,

    And rushed forward, gray-haired and young alike.

    And swore they would not rest in a bed

    Until matters returned to what they had been.
