  1. إن ابن يحيى وان فاق الورى كرماً

    وحاز ما حاز من علم ومن أدب

    Indeed, Ibn Yahya, though he surpasses all people in generosity,

    and has acquired what he has of learning and refinement,

  2. لكن أذا قيس بي يوماً تلوت له

    وفي الحمية معنى ليس في العنب

    yet, were he compared with me one day, I would recite to him:

    “And in wine’s ardor lies a quality not found in grapes.”
