May the streaming rain that has poured upon you never cease,

O environs of Kufan—my wish has returned, and that suffices.

I have not forgotten the pleasant life I enjoyed,

And a spring that ran clear for me from dear, pure-hearted folk,

When, in you, my fickle fortune dozed, unmindful

Of me, and the watcher's eye slept, heedless of my gathering,

Among young men whose faces were like full moons,

With none among mankind so radiant in nobility.

Each fair-faced and radiant, endowed with generosity,

    Knowing nothing but openhandedness and kindness;

And each keen of thought, an ocean of learning,

Who saw his father's path to glory and followed it.

Tell the one who strives to follow the trail of their glory:

Desist! How many a noble man has stopped short of it!

You are not one to rival him in a noble deed,

Even if your flank rose above al-Suha's crown.

Has anyone ever likened the sword to a staff,

Or ever compared shells with pure pearls?

My praise can never give even a partial account of them,

Even if I filled the pages with my praise of them.
