- أحين بلغت ما كنا نرجيWas it when you attained what we had hoped for,
- إذا قلت هذا السلم قد أقبلوا بهWhenever I say, “They have brought this peace,”
- أصرمت رامة أم تجدد حبلهاHave you severed ties with Rama, or has her cord been renewed?
- ألا يا عين فأنهمري بغزرOh eyes, shed abundant tears
- ألا يا لقومي للرقاد المسهدAh, my people—alas for sleepless slumber,
- إن جملا وإن تبينت منهاIndeed Juml, though I have discerned in her
- إن ممشاك نحو دار عديIndeed, your walk toward ʿAdī’s house
- إني امرؤ لا يغول النأي لي خلقاI am a man whose character distance does not corrupt.
- بني عمنا ما أسرع اللوم منكمCousins, how swiftly blame comes from you
- تلك عرسي رامت سفاها فراقيMy wife foolishly sought to leave me,
- عيل العزاء وخانني صبريMy fortitude was spent, and my patience betrayed me
- فدع عنك المراء ولا تردهSo leave disputation aside, and do not seek it,
- قل لوالي العهد إن لاقيتهTell the heir apparent, if you meet him—
- كلثم أنت الهم يا كلثمYou are my affliction, O Kaltham
- لعمرك ما إلى حسن رحلناBy your life, we did not journey to Hasan,
- ما على رسم منزل بالجنابWhat harm would befall a dwelling's trace at al-Janāb,
- نأتك سليمى فالهوى متشاجرSulayma has gone far from you, and passion is tangled.
- وأرى الوفود لدى المنازل من منىAnd I see the delegations at the lodgings of Mina;
- وذي رحم يطالعني أذاهAnd a kinsman whose harm confronts me—
- ولقد تعلم سلمى أننيAnd Salma surely knows that I
- يا ربع رامة بالعلياء من ريمO campsite of Ramah, on the high ground of Rim,
- يا هند ردي الوصل أن يتصرماO Hind, restore our bond lest it be severed,
