O campsite of Ramah, on the high ground of Rim,

will you return my greeting when I greet you?

What of the tribe whose full-grown riding-camels bore them off at dawn,

striding toward their exile at a headlong pace?

The day they left, I was like a drinker robbed

of his heart by a draught of Darum wine.

Indeed, by your fortune, my timber is not frail

in defense of honor, nor is my watering-pool breached.

    وَلي لِسانٌ كَحَدِّ السَّيفِ مَسمومِ

    My lineage is noble, and my glory is beyond compare;

and I have a tongue like the edge of a poisoned sword.

With it I defend the glory of people of noble ancestry,

each a mighty chieftain turbaned with a royal crown—

    great chiefs, bright-faced lords, marzbans,

    smooth-skinned, highborn, towering, lavish hosts.

Who can match Kisra and Shapur of the armies together,

and al-Hurmuzan, as objects of pride or reverence?

Lions of the battalions on the day of terror, when they advance—

and they humbled the kings of the Turks and Romans.

They walk in rings of fine, full-length mail,

with the stride of fierce and mighty lions.

There, if you ask, you will be told that we have

a rootstock that has subdued the might of all other rootstocks.
