نَكباً عَن مَوَدَّتي وَاِزوِرارا
Indeed Juml, though I have discerned in her
Though she turned away from my love and affection,
A turning away from my affection and an aversion,
And greeted me coldly with frowns and disdain,
شرّدَتdrove away بِاِدِّكارِهاthrough remembrance of her النَّومsleep عَنّيfrom me

وَأُطيرَ العَزاءُ منّي فطارا
Has driven sleep away from me through remembrance of her;
Thoughts of her kept me awake through the night,
And solace was sent flying from me, and flew away.
And drove all comfort and solace from me.

أَن تُحَيّا تَحِيَّةً أَو تُزارا
What harm would it do her family—she has done no wrong—
No fault have her people, that she shunned
For her to be offered a greeting or paid a visit,
All greeting, and met me with cold disdain.

وَحَمَوها لَجاجَةً وَصِرارا
On the day they showed me their scowls on her account
But the day that she frowned and turned from me,
And guarded her out of obstinacy and stubborn insistence?
Wilful pride and disdain were her bane.
