- أتنسى ليالينا بزحلة، والولاHave you forgotten our nights in Zahle, when affection
- أجدى كفاحك لو يفيد كفاحYour struggle would have availed, if struggle could avail;
- أطلق لمدمعك العنان وخلهGive your tears free rein, and let them
- أنا الغريب فلا أهل ولا وطنI am the stranger, with neither kin nor homeland.
- بلد مشى بسهوله وجبالهA country marched with its plains and mountains,
- تبوح لها بالحب عيناي إنماMy eyes confess love to her, yet
- تقولين إني سلوت فممنYou say I have ceased to love—then from whom
- خل البداوة رمحها وحسامهاLeave Bedouin life its lance and its sword,
- ستذكرني يوما فتذكرنا معاOne day you will remember me, then remember us together:
- طبيعة كأنها دميةNature, as though she were a figurine,
- عاد عهد الشقا إليه فعوديThe age of misery has returned to it; so return,
- غانية من بائعات الهوىA beautiful woman among those who sell love,
- لا القبر مسحور ولا في بابهThe grave is not enchanted, nor at its door
- مائت أنت؟ ماذا دهاك؟ لماذاAre you dead? What befell you? Why
- نصيبك من هذا الوجود مصائبهYour share of this existence is its calamities,
- والآن يا موت إلي اقتربAnd now, O Death, come near to me.
- وقفت وقد مد السكون رواقهI stood while stillness had spread its canopy
- يا أمة طماحة، في صدرهاO aspiring nation, in whose breast
- يا حريصا على تفقد مالكO you so intent on checking your wealth,
- يا سمخ لا سحب سقتك عهادهO Samakh, may no clouds water you with their showers,
- يا سيف آخر مالك في دولةO sword of the last sovereign in his realm,
- يا له في الرجال من رجلWhat a man he is among men,
