The grave is not enchanted, nor at its door

is there a guardian to defend its occupants.

But within it lies a buried sanctity:

the sanctity of the man buried in its precincts.

In the faithful grave's keeping lies a shrouded man,

not to be violated before his day of reckoning.

Life's afflictions wearied him, and he spurned it,

seeking in death a cure for his sufferings.

In a chamber where calamities halt,

paralyzed, and sink beneath its vaults.

The ruthless man encounters there a fierce warning,

and the afflicted sees there the resting place of his desires.

The soul would choose no repose but the grave's,

if given a choice, nor the body any dust but its dust.

So let the buried man sleep his eyelids' fill

in his coffin, and beware of angering him.

His remains are inviolable to you; honor him,

and keep yourself above touching his veil.

Indeed, whoever raids the graves and their inhabitants—

inevitable death becomes but part of his punishment.

If he escapes their keen sword and its point,

he will not escape the earth's wrath and its flies.

    مَا فُلَّ سَيْفٌ زُجَّ ضِمْنَ قِرَابِهِ

    This buried man, though laid to rest, possesses might;

no sword is blunted by being thrust into its sheath.

Do you deliberately expose yourself to death,

so it claims you, while you puzzle over its causes?

Whoever plunged into the deep, battling

its waves, was buried by them within its surging depths.

And he who tickles the serpent inside its hole

deliberately exposes himself to the venom of its saliva.

And he who startles the lion in its lair

falls prey to its two claws and its fang.

Leave destiny its book; let it decree what

it decrees, for you are not captive to its book's command.

Your good fortune never came from its nightingale's song,

nor your ill fortune from its raven's croaking.

No! And none granted you the water of its pool

but the one who granted you the gleam of its mirage.

Death's decree in the universe is irrevocable,

even if you seek refuge in its star and clouds.

Yet one who dies in the frailty of his gray age

is not like one who dies in the splendor of his youth.

Ah, brother of the lords, the Kaaba of their pride,

and adorner of lineages with his noble merits,

by God, I do not gloat over a calamity

that pierced learning's very heart through its nerves.

    سَرْعَانَ بَيْنَ سُطُوعِهِ وَغِيَابِهِ

    It befell you and, in you, eclipsed a star;

how brief the span between its shining and its setting!

You sought immortality, and have attained it, though

your life was spent in its pursuit.

He is not dead whose memory fills gatherings,

and whom the whole universe has honored with its admiration.

You spared no effort, excavating in the Valley of the Kings,

at the foot of its peak and the tops of its hills,

until you came upon its buried treasures

and made known its veiled wonders and marvels.

From it you looked out upon centuries long gone,

and brought their past back along its own tracks.

You saw the greatest gap in history,

and added chapters to its chapters.

Thus you raised the valley to the loftiest heights,

but wronged the dweller in its ravines.

Had you been content to plunder all his treasures,

his belongings, his food, and his clothing,

he would have forgiven you and borne no grudge; instead,

you entertained the thought of violating his veil.

Is the great Pharaoh to be humiliated in his grave,

he who is mighty in his sovereignty and majesty?

Did you not see before him and facing him

the palace guard, fully armed with its spears?

And you saw Anubis in his sarcophagus,

poised for action, and Amun in his sanctuary.

He is silent, yet in his silence

he is stronger and more eloquent than in his speech.

He thwarted decay, which could not touch him, and still

the light of his skin shines brilliantly.

The spirit hovers over his coffin,

and the body, supple as a fresh bough, lies in its robe.

Centuries have passed over him, yet it is as though

only yesterday he brought his blessed mounts to rest there.

So you see flame breathing through his food,

and see bubbles sparkling in his drink.

As though he were in his palace, not his grave,

seated cross-legged in glory upon his couch.

And learning is among his priests, and death among

his guards, and time among his chamberlains.

    فَالظُّلْمُ كَمْ يَجْنِي عَلَى أَرْبَابِهِ

    Hold back, sons of the Thames, in your excesses;

how often oppression brings harm upon its masters!

You have disturbed, in the sea, the whale of its surging depths,

and frightened, on land, the lion of its forest.

You have toppled, on earth, the throne of its kings,

and stripped, in the sky, its eagle of dominion.

You have crushed the weak people with your tyranny,

and laid shackles upon their necks.

So leave the shrouded man safe beneath the earth,

after his struggle, after his long torment.
