كُنْbe حَرِيصًاintent عَلَىon تَفَقُّدِexamining حَالِكْyour condition
كُنْ حَرِيصًا عَلَى تَفَقُّدِ حَالِكْ
O you so intent on checking your wealth,
O keen to check on your wealth
Be intent on examining your condition.
Be keen to check on your state
فِيكَin you بُخْلٌmiserliness بِالمَالِwith wealth لَاnot بِالمَعَاصِيwith sins

لَيْتَهَا فِي يَدَيْكَ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَالِكْ
You are miserly with wealth, but not with sins;
In you is stinginess with wealth, not with sins
If only, in your hands, they were part of your wealth!
If only it were in your hands some of your wealth

It is no wonder—while you condemn your own
It is not odd, while you starve yourself

Stingily with what you own

that you see people dying of hunger and do not
That you see the dying of hunger, yet not give
pity a hungry person or feel compassion for one dying.
To one in need, nor feel pity for one in peril

For today or tomorrow, you go to the grave

You are nothing in this life, and it may

Benefit the heirs after your demise
