مُتَدَفِّقًاsurging بِنِسَائِهِwith its women وَرِجَالِهِand its men
A country marched with its plains and mountains,
A country walked with its plains and mountains
Surging with its women and its men.
Gushing with its women and men
وَشَّىembroidered لَيَاليَهُits nights بريقُthe gleam of دُمُوعِهِits tears
وَسَرَىand spread الأَسَىgrief لَهَبًاas a flame عَلَىacross آصَالِهِits evenings
The gleam of its tears embroidered its nights,
Its nights were lit by the glimmer of its tears
And grief spread like flame across its evenings.
And sorrow flowed like flames on its homes
وَإِذَاand when مَشَىit marches وَهوَwhile it is المُفَجَّعُthe bereaved one بابنِهِof its son

And when it marches, bereaved of its son,
And when it walked, grieving for its son
Stand in awe of its grief, and do not ask how it fares.
Magnify its sorrow, and do not ask of its state
فِيin مَوكبٍa procession كَالسَّيلِlike a torrent لولاwere it not أَنَّهُthat it is

In a procession like a torrent, except that it
In a procession like a torrent, were it not
Moves slowly, and silence is its only speech.
Going slowly, and silence being all its speech
فَكَأَنَّهُso, as though it were مُتَعَثِّرٌstumbling بِدُمُوعِهِover its tears
أَوْor أَنَّهُthat it يَمْشِيwalks عَلَىupon آمَالِهِits hopes
So it is as though it were stumbling over its tears,
It's as though tripping on its tears
Or as though it were walking upon its hopes.
Or walking upon its hopes

And there is a bier whose blackness lies in the hearts,
And there a coffin, the darkness of which
As though within them lay its resting place.
Is like a resting place for it

A delegation of youths surrounds it, bidding farewell
Guarded by a delegation of youth bidding farewell
To the youth of its independence in the elder of its awakening.
To the shaykh of its awakening, the hero of its independence

And behind the bier you see a people bowed in reverence,
And behind the bier you see a reverent people
Seeking blessings from it by touching its shadows.
Blessed by touching its shadow

Its defenders reversed their arms when he fell,
Its guards have lowered their arms since he who fell
The guardian of peace, a martyr to his long struggle.
Guardian of peace, martyr of lifelong struggle

Who, then, lies shrouded, sunk in his slumber,
So who is he lying drowned in his eternal rest
On the bier, enveloping it in his overflowing majesty?
Flooded with the abundance of his glory?
وَعَلَيْهِand upon him مِنْfrom نُورِthe light of القَدَاسَةِholiness هَالَةٌa halo

And his right hand extended as though
Had been extended one last time with his bounty.
It was spread one last time with its generosity

That right hand nurtured friendship with a monarch
That right hand that tended the friendship of a ruler
Whose left hand held the people's necks in thrall.
While people's necks were obedient to its left

The smile of one unshackled from his chains

Or the smile of the crucified bearing
His lips verses of pardon for his assassin.
On his lips the verses of pardon for his killers

He who fed the hungry most of his food,
The feeder of the starving with all his food
And gave the destitute the rest of his wealth.
The giver of the destitute the remainder of his money

I ask no mercies from my Lord for him,
I do not ask for mercy from my Lord for him
For I am certain his final fate is good.
For I am certain of the goodness of his fate
فَالخَلْقُfor the creatures كُلُّهُمُall of them عِيَالُthe dependents of اللهِGod
أَقْرَبُهُمْthe closest of them إِلَيْهِto Him أَبَرُّهُمْthe kindest of them بِعِيَالِهِtoward His dependents
For all creatures are God's dependents;
All people are God's dependents
Those closest to Him are those kindest to His dependents.
The best of them most dutiful to His dependents
