تَقُولِينَyou say إِنِّيthat I سَلَوْتُhave ceased to love، فَمِمَّنْthen from whom
تَسَقَّطْتِyou gleaned ذَلِكَthat يَاO قَاسِيَهْcruel one؟
You say I have ceased to love—then from whom
You say I have gone astray, but from whom
did you glean that, O cruel one?
Have you heard this accusation, oh harsh one?
أَلَمْdid ... not? تَفْضَحِbetray النَّظَرَاتُthe glances غَرَامِيmy passion
وَقَدْand already أَصْبَحَتْhave become جَمْرَةًan ember حَامِيَهْscorching؟!
Have my glances not betrayed my passion,
Did not my adoring glances expose my passion
now that they have become a scorching ember?!
As they became burning embers?
وَهَلْand can ...? يَخْتَفِيhide العَاشِقُthe lover المُسْتَهَامُlove-stricken
وَلَوْand even if لَبِسَhe donned الظُّلْمَةَthe darkness الدَّاجِيَةْpitch-black؟
And can the love-stricken lover hide,
Can a lovestruck, confused lover hide
even if he dons pitch-black darkness?
Even if he wears the dark of night?
أَلَمْdid ... not? تَشْعُرِيyou feel بِأَنِينِيof my moaning يَسِيرُtravels
إِلَيْكِto you مَعَwith النِّسْمَةِthe breeze السَّارِيَهْtraveling by night؟
Have you not felt my moaning traveling
Do you not feel my moan traveling
to you with the breeze that roams by night?
To you with the passing breeze?
وَلَوْand if لَمْnot يُبَرِّدْهُcool it ثَغْرُthe mouth النَّسِيمِof the breeze
لَأَحْرَقَwould have scorched وَجْنَتَكِyour cheek الزَّاهِيَهْradiant!
And had the mouth of the breeze not cooled it,
If the breeze’s kiss did not cool it
it would have scorched your radiant cheek!
It would burn your blossoming cheek!
أَلَمْdid ... not? تَسْمَعِيyou hear نَبَضَاتِthe beats فُؤَادِيof my heart
أَنَافَتْrose عَلَىabove العَدِّcounting فِيin الثَّانِيَهْa second؟
Have you not heard the beats of my heart,
Did you not hear the beats of my heart
rising beyond counting in a single second?
Counting the seconds rapidly?
وَإِحْدَىand one of يَدَيَّmy two hands تَشُدُّpresses firmly عَلَيْهِupon it
وَدَمْعِيَand my tears تُمْسِكُهُholds them back الثَّانِيَهْthe second hand!
And one of my hands presses upon it,
One of my hands clutches it
while the other holds back my tears!
While the other wipes my tears!
لَئِنْif indeed تَكُis رُوحُكِyour soul تَصْبُوyearns إِلَيَّtoward me
وَكانَand there is بِقَلْبِكِin your heart لِيfor me زَاوِيَهْa corner
If indeed your soul yearns toward me,
If your soul inclines toward me
and there is a corner in your heart for me,
And your heart has a place for me,
فَرُوحِيthen my soul بِأَجْمَعِهَاin its entirety مِنْfrom يَدَيْكِyour two hands
عَلَىupon قَدَمَيْكِyour two feet هَوَتْfell جَاثِيَهْkneeling!
then my whole soul, from your hands,
Then my whole soul lies prostrated
has fallen kneeling at your feet!
At your feet, worshipping you!
أَنَاI أَبَدًاforever لِلهَوَىfor love نَاشِرٌone who unfolds
إِذَاif كُنْتِyou are أَنْتِyou yourself لَهُfor it طَاوِيَهْone who folds away!
I forever unfurl love,
I am forever spreading out to love
even if you yourself fold it away!
If you are folding into it!
وَإِنِيَand indeed I سَكْرَانُdrunk مِنْfrom خَمْرِهِits wine
إِذَاif كُنْتِyou are مِنْfrom خَمْرِهِits wine صَاحِيَهْsober!
And I am drunk on its wine,
And I am drunk on its wine
even if its wine leaves you sober!
If you are sober from it!
وَقَلْبِيand my heart بِهِin it غَائِصٌdiving فِيinto بُحُورٍseas
إِذَاif كَانَis قَلْبُكِyour heart فِيin سَاقِيَهْan irrigation channel!
And in it my heart dives into seas,
My heart dives deep in its oceans
even if your heart is in an irrigation channel!
If your heart draws from its cup!
وَقَدْand indeed جُزْتُI passed beyond فِيهِin it السَّحَابَthe clouds البَعِيدَdistant
إِذَاif كُنْتِyou are فِيهِin it عَلَىon رَابِيَهْa hill!
And in it I have passed beyond the distant clouds,
With it I have reached the distant clouds
even if in it you are upon a hill!
If you are upon its hilltop!
