لاقيت من حبها ما لو على جبل

فلا تحسد الكلب أكل الطعام

So envy not the dog that eats the food,

وما روضة علوية أسدية

No garden on high to Asad belongs is there,

وإني ليدعوني لأن أستزيدها

My heart calls me to ask her for more

شريف بجديه وضيع بنفسه

Noble through his ancestors, yet ignoble in himself,

وقائلة والدمع سكب مبادر

With a complainant, and tears flowing readily,

ومحلة شمل المكاره أهلها

A dwelling whose people have taken on disgrace,

من كانت الدنيا له شارة

حتى متى وإلى متى

ألا إنما الدنيا مطية بلغة

فيا بعل ليلى كم وكم بأذاتها

وتعلم أني ماجد وتروعها

إذا كنت ملحيا مسيئا ومحسنا

فقلنا لهم تلكم إذا بعد كرة

فإن كنت قد أجرمت جرما معظما

فو الله ما أدري أيغلبني الهوى

فإني إن أفتك يفتك مني

وليس الدهر مؤتمنا

فما أم سقب أودعته قرارة

أقول وقد صاح ابن دأية غدوة

أتى دون حلو الوعد من تكتم المطل
