لما ثنت جيد الغزال وأعرضت
When the gazelle turned her neck aside
يا أبا إسحاق سر في دعة
O Abu Ishaq, proceed at ease
وهم بسيوفهم الماضيات
Roaming with their swords of old
أنا في منزل خل
I dwell in an empty house
أعلي دونك يا علي حجاب
Above me, O Ali, there is a veil
أرى الدهر يجفوني ونفسي عزيزة
I see time treating me harshly though my soul is dear
وقائلٍ إذ رأى عزفي عن الطلب
A critic seeing my indifference to gain
الثوابي فتى ليس له
The virtuous youth, for him naught else
غيره الكون والفساد
The universe and corruption changed him,
لله درك قد أكملت أربعة
You owe God gratitude, you have fulfilled four,
أنا السيف يخشى حده قبل هزه
I am the sword whose edge is feared before brandishing
لأنت في العزل على غضه
In your seclusion, you are above reproach,
لعمري لئن بيعت في دار غربتي
By my life! If in the land of my exile,
لو كنت عافية لكنت محببا
If you were well-mannered, you would be beloved
مليح الدل والحدقه
Beautiful are his eyes and pupils
أزال الله دولتهم سريعا
God removed their power quickly
فإن تسألي في الناس عنا فإننا
If you ask the people about us, we are
في عذاب يطلب الطالب
Homesick for death, the seeker seeks
تفاحة من عند تفاحة
An apple from an apple tree
أباهل ينجني كلبكم
Your dog howls for me to save him
من سره طيب الحياة
He whose secret is a good life
إذا ما شئت أن تحظى
If you wish to prosper
أهدى لنا مرة سفرجلة
He once gave us a yellow bird
جلست فقام الدهر فيما تريده
You sat, and time passed as you wished,
تعجبت در من شيبي فقلت لها
The pearl was amazed at my old age, so I said to it,
أأخ الكريم على المدام نريدها
O generous brother, we want more wine
أخو دنف رمته فاقصدته
A brother whose glance is a dart
قد لاح بالدير نار العابدين وقد
The fire of worshippers has appeared at the monastery, when
يا هذه كم يكون اللوم والفند
O you, how much blame and rebuke there is,
دخلت السوق ابتاع
I entered the market to buy
عريان أعرى من فصوص النرد
More naked than dice from their box
فديتك من مقبل معرضٍ
I sacrifice myself for you from an averter and a drawer near
أبا حسن وفنا حقنا
Abu Hasan fulfill our right
مازح صديقتك ما أحب مزاحا
A jester, do not jest with your companion, I do not love jesting,
بعثتها حالية النحر
You sent her, fresh as the slit throat,
يا ابن المدبر أنت علمت الورى
O son of the benefactor, you have taught mankind
خدي لدمع فيه مرفض
One cheek rejecting tears that flow
ألا يا ضاربا العباد
O you who strikes the servants
لما ثنت جيد الغزال وأعرضت
When the gazelle tilted her neck and turned away
أوسعت عمرا ثنائي حين أوسعني
He granted me a doubly generous life when he endowed me
تكنفني السلاح واضجروني
Armor engulfed me and they annoyed me
إذا آنس الناس ما يجمعون
When people delight in what they gather,
مشتمل بالبغض لا تنثني
أبا حسن شفعت إلى الليالي
تعيرين عريي رجال سفاهة
فقل للفاخرين على نزار
لا تقعدن بسامرا على الطرق
أهدى لنا التفاح من كفه
ركبت حمار الكرا
تلبس للحرب أثوابها
ألم تر فتحا وما ناله
يا مولج الليل في النهار
هجوت ابن أبي الطاهرِ
قالوا اعتلت فقلت كل
عيب بني مخلد سماحهم
أعاذل إن يكن برادي رثا
لا تنظرن إلى امرئ ما أصله
ملوك ثناهم كأحسابهم
أصبح الدهر مسيئا كله
سواء إذا ما زرتهم في ملمة
