فو حق من سمك السماء بقدرة

By the truth of Him who built the sky with might

لا تيأسن من انفراج شديدة

Do not despair when faced with adversity,

وإذا أعلنت أمرا حسنا

When you declare something good

ويمنعني التكلم في كثير

Much I wish to say, yet must refrain

كم من فتى تحمد أخلاقه

How many a youth whose morals you praise

فأكثر من تلقى يسرك قوله ولكن

So gather more of those whose words give you joy

اذا لم تستطيع شيئا فدعه

If you cannot do something then leave it

وما عدم العادي على الناس ظالما

He who forebears with everyone is not weak

صرمت حبالك بعد وصلك زينب

After being united, you turned away Zainab

من يسل يعط ومن يستفتح الباب

Who asks receives, and he who knocks -

فيا منزلا سوى البلى بين اهله

Home of all but ruin between its people

ما أقرب النازل بي في غد وإن

How near is the abode in which I shall lodge tomorrow,

ولا مشير كذي نصح ومقدرة

No counselor is one whose wisdom and ability

شر المواهب ما تجود به

The worst gifts are those you give

وكذاك الدهر مأتمه

Roses are red, violets are blue

فأكثر من تلقى يسرك قوله

The words of many bring you joy,

يشقى رجال ويشقى آخرون بهم

Some men are wretched, while others make them so

ولا اقول اذا ما جئت فاحشة

I do not say, when I commit a gross misdeed,

اذا كنت ذا لب فإياك والتي

If you were tender-hearted, beware of she

أبا الهذيل هداك الله يا رجل

O Abalhathail may God guide you, O man

لا ترضى للأخوان غير الذي

Do not accept for the brothers other than what

رب مزاح قد دعا

O Lord of jest, he called

يا أيها الدارس علما ألا

O you who study science, do not

رأيت صغير الامر تنمي شؤونه

I saw the small in rank grow in his affairs

لا تنطقن بمقالة في مجلس

Do not speak a word in an assembly

لم تخل أفعالنا اللاتي نذل بها

Our actions which we take pride in

اذا كنت في حاجة مرسلا

When in need of sending a messenger

فسائل إن منيت بأمر شك

Asker, if you are plagued by doubtful thoughts,

لا تدخلن بنميمة

Do not come between the branch and its bark

كل إلى الغاية محثوت

All towards an end are driven

عدوك ذو العقل خير من

An enemy with reason is better than

اذا ما خلوت الدهر يوما فلا تقل

If ever life's hardships make you taste loneliness,

واشكر فإن الشكر من

Give thanks, for gratitude is the duty

وللصمت خير من كلام بمأثم

Silence is better than sinful words,

وإن لسان المرء مفتاح قلبه

For the tongue of a man is the key to his heart

المرء يحظى ثم يسعد جده

A man is granted what he earns

وكل أخي ثري سوف يمسي

And every wealthy brother will become

أطل الصمت فإن الصمت حلم

Silence prevails, for silence is wisdom

عاص الهوى إن الهوى مركب

The passion is rebellious; passion is a ship

بقينا في بهائم راتعات

We remained among grazing beasts

لا ترضى للإخوان غير الذي

Do not accept for the brethren anything but that

أيها اللائمي على نكد الدهر

O you who blame the troubles of fate

لا تذع سرا إلى طالبه

Do not reveal a secret to the one who seeks it

اذا كنت لا ترجى بدفع ملمة

If you do not hope to repel an affliction,

ليس من مات فاستراح بميت

The dead find no rest in death

بلوت أمور الناس سبعين حجة

I have experienced people's affairs for seventy years

اذا ما رضت ذا سن كبير

When you are pleased with an old man

من يخبرك بشتم عن أخ

Whoever tells you of a brother's insults

المرء يجمع والزمان يفرق

Man collects while time disperses

نراع اذا الجنائز قابلتنا

When the processions of the dead meet us,

إن النفوس على البقاء حريصة

The souls yearn for eternity

ألا إن بعض الظن إثم فلا تكن

Beware! Some suspicion is a sin, so do not

واذا طلبت العلم فاعلم انه

When seeking knowledge, know that it is

اذا قلت قدر أن قولك عرضة

If you say fate preordains, your words invite

قل للذي لست أدري من تلونه

Tell the one whose true colors I cannot discern

عزاءك أيها العين السكوب

O weeping eye, your solace

تأويني هم فبت أخاطبه

My anxiety kept me awake, so I conversed with it

ينادونه وقد صم عنهم

They call out to him, but he is deaf to them,

إن اللبيب الذي يرضى بعيشته

الله احمد شاكرا

وصاف اذا صافيت بالود خالصا

اذا ما أهنت النفس لم تلق مكرما

قد ينفع الادب الاطفال في صغر

ولا تسم الناس منك الذي

لا بد من إتيان ما حم في غد

رب سر كتمته فكأني

كم اهلكت مكة من زائر

تخير من الاخوان كل ابن حرة

الدار جنة عدن إن عملت بما

لا يعجبنك من يصون ثيابه

أنست بوحدتي ولزمت بيتي

تود عدوي ثم تزعم أنني

لا أخون الخليل في السر حتى

لأشكرن هماما فضل نعمته

إلى الله اشكو إنه موضع الشكوى

شر الاخلاء من يسعى لنرضيه

اني لأعرض عن أشياء أسمعها

العلم زين وتشريف لصاحبه

بني عليك بتقوى الإله

كن في أمورك ساكنا

غصب المسكين زوجته

تاه على إخوانه كلهم

ما أقرب النازل بي في غد

أصددن بعد تألف الشمل

إن خليلي واحد وجهه
