٧. ضَيْفٌ ألَمَّ إلَيْكَ لَمْ تَحْفِلْ بِهِ

٨. دَعْ عَنْكَ مَا قَدْ فَاتَ فِي زَمَنِ الصِّبا

9. And remember your sins, weeping for them
Fear the Reckoning, which surely

٩. واخْشَ مُنَاقَشَةَ الحِسَابِ فَإنَّهُ
لابُدَّ يُحْصَى مَا جَنَيْتَ وَيُكْتَبُ

١٠. لَمْ يَنْسَهُ المَلَكَانِ حِينَ نَسِيتَهُ
بَلْ أثْبَتَاهُ وَأَنْتَ لاهٍ تَلعَبُ

١٢. وَغُرُورُ دُنْيَاكَ التِي تَسْعَى لَهَا

١٣. وَالليلُ فَاعْلَمْ وَالنَّهَارُ كِلاهُمَا
أنْفَاسُنَا فِيهَا تُعَدُّ وتُحْسَبُ

14. Is in truth possessions that will disappear
Both night and day, know that

١٤. وَجَمِيعُ مَا حَصَّلْتَهُ وَجَمَعْتَهُ
حَقاً يَقِيناً بَعْدَ مَوْتِكَ يُنْهَبُ

15. Our breaths in them are counted and limited
All that you hoarded and collected

١٥. تَبَّاً لِدَارٍ لا يَدُومُ نَعِيمُهَا
وَمَشِيدُهَا عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ يُخْرَبُ

16. Will surely be seized after your death

١٦. فَاسْمَعْ هُدِيتَ نَصَائِحاً أوْلاَكَها
بَرٌّ لبيبٌ عَاقِلٌ مُتَأدِّبُ

17. Woe to a house whose comfort lasts not
And whose builder will crumble before long

١٧. صَحِبَ الزَّمَانَ وَأهْلَهُ مُسْتَبْصِراً
وَرَأَى الأُمورَ بمَا تَؤُوبُ وَتَعْقُبُ

18. So hearken to counsel I direct to you
Righteous, reasonable, and well-mannered

١٨. هْدَى النَّصِيحَةَ فَاتَّعِظْ بمَقَالِهِ
فَهُوَ التقِيُّ اللَّوْذَعِيُّ الأدْرَبُ

19. He kept company with the times and people, discerning
And saw events with insight into how they end and recur

١٩. لا تَأْمَنِ الدَّهْرَ الصُّرُوفَ فإنَّهُ
لا زَالَ قِدْماً للرِّجَالِ يُهَذِّبُ

20. So follow the guidance of his words
For he is devout, refined, and enlightened

٢٠. وَكَذَلِكَ الأيَّامُ فِي غَدَوَاتِهَا
مَرَّتْ يُذَلُّ لَهَا الأعَزُّ الأنْجَبُ

21. Do not feel secure from fate's vicissitudes
For it remains a foe to men, humbling them

٢١. فَعَلَيْكَ تَقْوَى اللهِ فَالْزَمْهَا تَفُزْ
إنَّ التَّقِيَّ هُوَ البَهِيُّ الأهْيَبُ

22. Thus the days in their rounds
Have passed, humbling the proudest and noblest

٢٢. وَاعْمَلْ لِطَاعَتِهِ تَنَلْ مِنْهُ الرِّضَا
إنَّ المُطِيعَ لِرَبِّه لمُقرَّبُ

23. So hold to fear of God and keep to it
For the devout is the most renowned and revered

٢٣. وَاقْنَعْ فَفي بَعْضِ القَنَاعَةِ رَاحَةٌ
وَاليَأْسُ مِمَّا فَاتَ فَهُوَ المَطْلَبُ

24. And work in obedience to Him, so you may attain
His good pleasure, for the obedient is brought near

٢٤. وَإذَا طُعِمتَ كُسِيتَ ثَوْبَ مَذَلَّةٍ
فَلَقَدْ كُسِي ثَوْبَ المَذلَّةِ أشْعَبُ

25. Be content, for in some contentment is ease
And cease longing for what is gone, for that is best

٢٥. وَتَوَقَّ مِنْ غَدْرِ النِّسَاءِ خِيَانَةً
فَجَمِيعُهُنَّ مَكَائِدٌ لَكَ تُنصَبُ

26. If you've had your fill, wear the garb of lowliness
For the noblest of men have worn the garb of baseness

٢٦. لا تَأْمَنِ الأنْثَى حَيَاتَكَ إنَّها
كالأُفعُوَانِ يُراعُ مِنْهُ الأنيُبُ

27. And beware women's betrayal and deceit
For all of them set snares for you

٢٧. لا تَأْمَنِ الأنْثَى زَمَانَكَ كُلَّهُ
يَوْماً وَلَوْ حَلَفَتْ يَمِيناً تَكْذبُ

28. Do not feel secure from women your whole life
For she is like serpents, feared for their venom

٢٨. تُغْرِي بطِيبِ حَدِيثِها وَكَلامِهَا
وَإذَا سَطَتْ فَهي الثَّقِيلُ الأشْطَبُ

29. Do not ever feel secure from women
A single day, even if she swears untruthfully

٢٩. وَالْقَ عَدُوَّكَ بالتَّحِيَّةِ لا تَكُنْ
مِنْهُ زَمَانَكَ خَائِفاً تَتَرَقَّبُ

30. She lures with her sweet talk and words
But when given rein, she is harsh and unruly

٣٠. إنَّ الحَقُودَ وَإنْ تَقَادَمَ عَهْدُهُ
فَالْحِقْدُ بَاقٍ فِي الصُّدُورِ مُغَيَّبُ

31. Meet your enemy with greeting, but do not
Live in fear of him all your days, wary

٣١. وَإذَا الصَّدِيقُ رَأَيْتَهُ مُتَمَلِّقاً
فَهُوَ العَدُوُّ وَحَقُّهُ يُتَجَنَّبُ

32. Though the resentful one's pact is old
Resentment remains hidden away in hearts

٣٢. لا خَيْرَ فِي وُدِّ امرِئٍ مُتَمَلِّقٍ
حُلْوِ اللسَانِ وَقَلْبُهُ يَتَلَهَّبُ

33. When you see a friend fawning
He is the enemy, so avoid his "rights"

٣٣. يَلْقَاكَ يَحْلِفُ أنَّهُ بكَ وَاثِقٌ
وإذَا تَوَارَى عَنْكَ فَهْوَ العَقْرَبُ

34. No good is in the love of a fawning man
Sweet of tongue but whose heart burns with rage

٣٤. يُعْطِيكَ مِنْ طَرَفِ اللِّسَانِ حَلاوَةً
وَيَرُوغُ عَنْكَ كَمَا يَرُوغُ الثَّعْلَبُ

35. He meets you swearing he trusts you
But when he turns from you, he is a scorpion

٣٥. وَاخْتَرْ قَرِينَكَ وَاصْطَفِيهِ تَفَاخُراً
إنَّ القَرِينَ إلى المُقَارَنِ يُنْسَبُ

36. He gives you sweetness from the edge of his tongue
But slithers away from you like a fox

٣٦. إنَّ الغَنِيَّ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ مُكَرَّمٌ
وَتَرَاهُ يُرْجَى مَا لَدَيْهِ وَيُرْهَبُ

37.
Choose your companion and select him proudly

٣٧. ويُبَشُّ بالتَّرْحِيبِ عِنْدَ قُدُومِهِ
وَيُقَامُ عِنْدَ سَلامِهِ وَيُقَرَّبُ

38. For a man is ascribed to his companion
The wealthy man is honored among men

٣٨. وَالفَقْرُ شَيْنٌ للرِّجَالِ فَإنَّهُ
يُزْرَى بِهِ الشَّهْمُ الأرِيبُ الأنْسَبُ

39. Hoped for what he has, feared,
Welcomed on arrival,

٣٩. وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ للأقَارِبِ كُلِّهِمْ
بتَذَلُّلٍ وَاسْمَحْ لَهُمْ إنْ أذْنَبُوا

40. Brought near when he bids peace, and drawn close
While poverty is disgraceful for men

٤٠. وَدَعِ الكَذُوبَ فَلا يَكُنْ لَكَ صَاحِباً
إنَّ الكَذُوبَ لبئْسَ خِلاً يُصْحَبُ

41. By which the valiant, noble man is demeaned
Lower your wing to all your kin

٤١. وَذَرِ الحَسُودَ وَلَوْ صَفَا لَكَ مَرَّةً
أبْعِدْهُ عَنْ رُؤْيَاكَ لا يُسْتَجْلَبُ

42. Gently bearing their wrongs if they slip
Leave off lies, let no liar be your companion

٤٢. وَزِنِ الكَلامَ إذا نَطَقْتَ وَلا تَكُنْ
ثَرْثَارَةً فِي كُلِّ نَادٍ تَخْطُبُ

43. For the liar makes wretched company
Shun the envious one even if he befriends you a time

٤٣. وَاحْفَظْ لِسَانَكَ وَاحْتَرِزْ مِنْ لَفْظِهِ
فَالْمَرْءُ يَسْلَمُ باللِّسَانِ وَيَعْطَبُ

44. Do not let him be brought back into your sight
Weigh your words when you speak, do not be

٤٤. والسِّرَ فَاكْتُمْهُ وَلا تَنْطِقْ بِهِ
فَهُوَ الأسِيرُ لَدَيْكَ إذْ لا يُنْشَبُ

45. A blabbermouth claiming every assembly
Guard your tongue and beware its edge

٤٥. وَاحْرَصْ عَلَى حِفْظِ القُلُوبِ مِنَ الأذَى
فَرُجُوعُهَا بَعْدَ التَّنَافُرِ يَصْعُبُ

46. For one is safe by the tongue but undone by it
Conceal the secret and do not speak it

٤٦. إنَّ القُلُوبَ إذا تَنَافَرَ وُدُّهَا
شِبْهُ الزُّجَاجَةِ كَسْرُهَا لا يُشْعَبُ

47. For it is captive with you if not broadcast
If a man's secret is not concealed

٤٧. وَكَذَاكَ سِرُّ المَرْءِ إنْ لَمْ يَطْوِهِ
نَشَرَتْهُ ألْسِنَةٌ تَزِيدُ وَتَكْذِبُ

48. Tongues will spread it, adding lies
Do not be greedy, for greed brings no increase

٤٨. لا تحْرَصَنْ فَالْحِرْصُ لَيْسَ بزَائِدٍ
فِي الرِّزْقِ بَلْ يُشْقِي الحَرِيصَ وَيُتْعِبُ

49. In provision, but only vexes the greedy and wearies
Remaining desperate, plotting trickery

٤٩. وَيَظَلُّ مَلْهُوفاً يَرُومُ تَحَيُّلاً
وَالرِّزْقُ لَيْسَ بِحِيلَةٍ يُسْتَجْلَبُ

50. While provision comes not through cunning
How many helpless are given their provision

٥٠. كَمْ عَاجِزٍ فِي النَّاسِ يُؤْتَى رِزْقَهُ
رغْداً ويُحْرَمُ كيِّسٌ ويُخيَّبُ

51. Abundant, while the shrewd are deprived and disappointed
Be true to trusts and shun betrayal

٥١. أدِّ الأمَانَةَ وَالخِيَانَةَ فَاجْتَنِبْ
وَاعْدِلْ وَلا تَظْلِمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ مَكْسبُ

52. Be just and wrong no one, so you may profit
If you are afflicted with adversity, be patient

٥٢. وَإذَا بُلِيتَ بنَكْبَةٍ فَاصْبِرْ لَهَا
مَنْ ذَا رَأَيْتَ مُسََلَّماً لا يُنْكَبُ

53. Whom have you seen spared adversity?
When severe trials befall you in your time

٥٣. وَإذَا أَصَابَكَ فِي زَمَانِكَ شِدَّةٌ
وَأَصَابَكَ الخَطْبُ الكَرِيهُ الأصْعَبُ

54. And grave events, the most difficult, strike you
Then call upon your Lord, for He is nearer

٥٤. فادعُ لِرَبِّكَ إنَّهُ أدْنَى لِمَنْ
يَدْعُوهُ مِنْ حَبْلِ الوَرِيدِ وَأقْرَبُ

55. To one who calls Him than the jugular vein
Remain aloof from people as much as you can

٥٥. كُنْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتَ عَنِ الأنَامِ بِمَعْزِلٍ
إنَّ الكَثِيرَ مِنَ الوَرَى لا يُصْحَبُ

56. For many of humankind make wretched company
Take as your companion a master, gaining by him

٥٦. وَاجْعَلْ جَلِيسَكَ سَيِّداً تَحْظَ بِهِ
حَبْراً لَبِيباً عَاقِلاً يَتَأَدَّبُ

57. Sagacity, wisdom, propriety, and manners
And beware the supplication of the wronged

٥٧. وَاحْذَرْ مِنَ المَظْلُومِ سَهْماً صَائِباً
وَاعْلَمْ بأنَّ دُعَاءَهُ لا يُحْجَبُ

58. For his prayer goes straight without veil
When you see livelihood grown constricted in a town

٥٨. وَإذَا رَأَيْتَ الرِّزْقَ ضَاقَ ببَلْدَةٍ
وَخَشِيتَ فِيها أنْ يَضِيقَ المَكْسَبُ

59. And fear sustenance will be straitened there
Then move on, for God's earth is spacious

٥٩. فَارْحَلْ فَأَرْضُ اللهِ وَاسِعَةُ الفَضَا
طُولاً وَعَرْضاً شَرْقُها وَالمَغْرِبُ

60. In length and breadth, east and west
So I have counseled you - if you accept my counsel

٦٠. فَلَقَدْ نَصَحْتُكَ إنْ قَبِلْتَ نَصِيحَتِي
فَالنُّصْحُ أغْلَى مَا يُبَاعُ وَيُوهَبُ

61. It is the most precious of what is sold or gifted

٦٣. فَاصْغِ لِوَعْظِ قَصِيدَةٍ أَوْلاَكَها
طَوْدُ العُلومِ الشَّامِخَاتِ الأهْيَبُ

64. The towering summits of sciences sublime

٦٤. أعْنِي عَليّاً وَابْنَ عَمَّ مُحَمَّدٍ
مَنْ نَالَهُ الشَّرفُ الرَّفِيعُ الأنْسَبُ

65. Whom the lofty glorious nobility adorned

عَدَدَ الخَلائِقِ حَصْرُها لا يُحْسَبُ
