ألا هل أتاها أن دجلة ذللت

Has she not learned that Tigris once subsided

هل معشر في الناس أفضل مشهد

لعمري وما عمري علي بهين

ألا أبلغا الوركاء أن عميدها

جلبنا الخيل والإبل المهارى

We brought the finest horses and camels

The rashness of a people before us misled them not,

ضربنا حماة النرسيان بكسكر

We struck the protectors of Persia with spears

وسائل زرنجا هل كب جمعا

And to Zarnuj did my raiders march, gathering a great host,

ألم يأتيك والأنباء تسري

Did not the news come to you, spreading,

شاب المفارق والأعراض فالتمعت

صبحنا بالبقايس رهط كسرى

We arose at daybreak as companions of Kisra

شفى النفس قتلى بين روضة سلهب

The souls were revived by those killed in the meadow of Salhab

جلبنا الخيل من بلد بباب

We brought the horses from a distant land

جلبنا الخيل من أكناف نيق

We brought the horses from pleasant valleys

ألم ترنا غداة المقر جئنا

Did you not see us the morning we left the camp

شهدنا بعون الله أفضل مشهد

With God's help we witnessed the best scene

صبحنا الحيرة الروحاء خيلا

إن ابن عفان الذي جربتم
