- أتيت الفيض مشتكيا زمانيI came to al-Fayd, complaining of my times;
- أعدو على مال بسطام فأنهبهWandering on Bistam's expanse I plunder it
- أنت أمرؤ غث الصنيعة رثهاYou are a man whose favors are paltry and shabby.
- أني مررت بشاهين وقد نفحتI passed by Shahin as there blew
- تولى الموصلي فقد تولتAl-Mawsili has departed, and so have vanished
- صنع من الله أني كنت أعرفكمIt was God's grace that I knew you
- فلأ نظرن إلى الجبال وأهلهاSo I shall surely look at the mountains and their people,
- لموسى أعبد وأنا أخوهMusa has slaves, and I am his brother,
- ليت شعري أضاقت الأرض عنيWould that I knew: has the earth grown too narrow for me,
- ليتك إذ نبتني بواحدةWould that, when you beset me, with a single thing
- ليهن أبا العباس رأى إمامهMay his imam's decision gladden Abu al-Abbas;
- محب صد آلفهA lover whose beloved has turned away—
- وإني على عدمي لصاحب همةAnd despite my poverty, I am indeed a man of high ambition;
- وسائل عن حماري كيف جالهماYou who ask about my two donkeys and how they fare,
- ولائمة لاقتك يا فيض في الندىAnd many a reproachful woman met you, O Fayḍ, over your generosity;
