أنتَ أمرؤٌ غَثُّ الصَّنيَعةِ رثّها

أنتَ أمرؤٌ غَثُّ الصَّنيَعةِ رثّها

لا تُحْسِن النُّعْمَى إلى أمثالي

لا تُحْسِن النُّعْمَى إلى أمثالي

You are a man whose favors are paltry and shabby.

You are a man of poor character, most vile

You do not bestow kindness on the likes of me.

You do not repay favors to the likes of me

نُعْمَاك لا تَعْدُوك إلاّ في امرئ

نُعْمَاك لا تَعْدُوك إلاّ في امرئ

في مَسْكِ مِثْلْكِ من ذوي الأشكالِ

في مَسْكِ مِثْلْكِ من ذوي الأشكالِ

Your bounty reaches no farther than you, except to a man

Your favors extend only to those you deem worthy

In the skin of your like, one of the same sort.

To the wretched likes of you, of ugly forms

وإذا نظرتَ إلى صَنيعك لم تَجدْ

وإذا نظرتَ إلى صَنيعك لم تَجدْ

أحَداً سَمَوْتَ به إلى الإفضالِ

أحَداً سَمَوْتَ به إلى الإفضالِ

And when you look at your benefactions, you do not find

And when you look upon your own deeds, you find

Anyone through whom you have risen to generosity.

None whom you have exalted through your generosity

فاسْلَمْ بغير سَلاَمةٍ تُرجى لها

فاسْلَمْ بغير سَلاَمةٍ تُرجى لها

إلاّ لِسَدّكَ خَلَّة الأنذالِ

إلاّ لِسَدّكَ خَلَّة الأنذالِ

So fare well, though no good is hoped from your well-being,

So surrender without hope for deliverance

Except your meeting the needs of the base.

Except to fill your void, you wretch
