ريحُ العَشِىِّ وبَرْدُ الثَّلج يُؤذيني
I passed by Shahin as there blew
I passed by a falcon when the evening breeze blew,
the evening wind, and the cold of the snow was hurting me.
And the icy cold pained me.

لاَ بل ولاَ حَسَبٍ دانٍ ولا دينِ
He did not shield his honor from me by giving me clothing—
Yet my honor was not protected by his coat,
no, nor even by modest nobility, nor by faith.
Nor by lineage or faith.

If the wet nurses’ milk has not changed him
If the milk of noble nurses did not change him
from his forefathers’ nature, men of lofty noses,
From the nature of his rough Bedouin ancestors,

then perhaps a husband was away from his wife,
A husband may sometimes be absent from his wife,
and one of the packhorse grooms fucked her.
Yet she is loyal, unlike some sly foxes.

And no cock ever stirred and grew full of lust
No stallion ever stirred, filled with desire,
without a vein stirring in Shahin’s arse.
Except the stirring of instinct in a falcon.
