Would that I knew: has the earth grown too narrow for me,

or am I an exile, driven from the lands?

Or am I Qudar, or al-Hababa, or the Red One,

    through whom Thamud met calamity?

Or am I content with the barest livelihood,

my ambition mere sustenance and a paltry pittance?

    ويدي حُرَّةٌ وقلبي شَديدُ

    My tongue is cutting, and my sword is keen;

my hand is free, and my heart is strong.

with armies and troops stationed at it—

we have entered in the morning

and evening, while you are barred from it.

So lessen your barriers today, since I

am no emir, nor do you command an army.

No man of dignity will stay in a land of

humiliation, nor will a resolute man of letters go unwanted.

And roam the enemy's wastelands, since I

am no captive, nor are there shackles upon me.

    Whoever flees humiliation—surely,

the [wide expanse?] is his destination, and open space stands ready.
