It was God's grace that I knew you

before prosperity, while you wore loincloths.

Not a year passed before I saw you

walking in silk, Quhi cloth, and soft fabrics.

And in the sunlit places your women were still

shouting at wood pigeons beneath the grapevines.

Then they began strutting in Iraqi brocade and in

rare silk-and-wool fabrics, dark-hued and Taruni.

They were made to forget cutting hulawa plants from their native beds,

and their carrying of dodder in the two panniers.

At last, when they grew wealthy, they said—and lied—

“We are the shahrijs, sons of the dihqans.”

My cock in the ass of Sasan's mother if he acknowledges you,

and a rutting mule's cock in Shirin's ass!

If the lowest-ranking and basest of them were asked,

he would boast, “I am Shubin's son,”

and say, “Khosrow granted me land and made me his heir.

So who can outboast me, or oppose me?”

Who will tell Khosrow, while he is in Saqar,

of the Nabataeans' claim—they are the devils' eggs—

and that they claim you begot them,

just as the spiny-tailed lizard claimed, “I am a drop of the fish's semen”?

Then he would give one cough in the belly of the Fire,

that would rend and split Qarun's heart with fear.

Do you not see them, now that they have taken their pack saddles

off their she-asses and taken the hackneys for themselves,

and left the vegetable plots for

    kings' residences and rulers' gates?

Their cauldrons boil with rage against the Arabs,

out of religious enmity toward God's Messenger.

So tell them—they deserve accusations of fornication—

“Worst of creation, you with foul-smelling beards!

None count as men but Nizar in its ancestral stock,

and Hashim, its lamps, with high-bridged noses,

and the clan sprung from my forebear Qahtan; they

    scorn the inarticulate, accursed Nabataeans.

For none upon earth's back has noble lineage,

among those claiming kinship with Khosrow, except Hamdun:

a noble lord bearing king-of-kings majesty, and a report

telling you of a blessed man of Khosrow's lineage.

    فانظُر إلى حَسَبٍ بادٍ ومخزونِ

    And if you doubt it, his portrait is in the Iwan;

so behold a pedigree both manifest and held in store.”
