فَقُلْت لها لَن يَقْدحَ الّلوْمُ في البحرِ
And many a reproachful woman met you, O Fayḍ, over your generosity;
The blamers met you, O overflowing abundance in the dew
So I told her, "Reproach will not harm the sea."
So I said to them, blame will not diminish the sea
أرادَتْshe wanted لِتثنْيِto turn away الفَيّضَFayḍ عنfrom عادةhabit النّدىgenerosity
أرادَتْ لِتثنْيِ الفَيّضَ عن عادة النّدى

ومَنْ ذَا الذّي يَثني السَّحَابَ عنِ القَّطْرِ
She sought to turn Fayḍ away from his habit of generosity;
She wanted to divert the abundant from the custom of dew
And who can turn the clouds away from rain?
And who can divert the clouds from raining?

مَواقعُ ماءِ المُزنِ في البلدِ القَفْرِ
The places where Fayḍ's bounty falls in every town
The places of flowing abundance in every land
Are like the places where rainclouds' water falls on barren land.
Are like places of rainwater in the barren land

It is as though the delegations to Fayḍ, when they set out
As if the delegations of abundance, when they carried
For Fayḍ, came upon the Night of Decree in his presence.
To the abundance, met him on the night of decree

Whenever petitioners came to him, there blazed
When the beseechers come to him, are kindled on him
Upon him the lamps of affability and good cheer.
The lanterns of generosity and good tidings
